Internet Basics: Surfing the Web Safely

Stop by the Longmont Library’s Computer Lab on the second floor from 4:30-6:30 pm on Tuesday, Aug. 8 for a free computer class on internet safety. In this session, we will cover the basics of internet security, how to establish secure passwords and password storage advice; examine anti-spam and anti-phishing security measures and how to avoid viruses, spyware, and emails that are dangerous; and lastly, we look at secure payment solutions for buying and conducting business online. No registration required. View details at the Library Programs webpage or call 303-651-8769.

Free swim lesson sessions

Recreation Services is sponsoring 200 free swim lesson sessions for resident youth who do not know how to swim. The goal of this program is to provide more opportunities for youth to learn how to be safe and have fun in and around the water. To qualify, applicants must be a child aged 3-12 years old; in need of beginner swim lessons; live within the city limits of Longmont; demonstrate a financial need; and have not taken swim lessons with the City of Longmont in the past. For more information and to apply, visit the Swim webpage, stop by Centennial Pool, 1201 Alpine St., or call 303-774-4706.

Memorial Building maintenance closure

Every year, the City’s recreation facilities close for maintenance on systems and equipment. The St Vrain Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Ave., will be closed Aug. 7-12. Visit the Longmont Recreation Center, Centennial Pool and Sunset Pool during the closure. For more information, call 303-774-4700 or visit the Rec webpage.

Downtown Longmont Sidewalk Sales

Starting at 11 am on Saturday, Aug. 12, participating downtown Longmont businesses will be offering a variety of sale items and summer clearances both outside and inside their businesses. More info at DowntownLongmont.com or call 303-651-8484.

Removing and reporting graffiti

Removing graffiti as soon as possible is important because graffiti adds to the deterioration of neighborhoods if left in place. When an individual or neighborhood becomes involved in active and frequent removal of graffiti, it sends a message to offenders that their destructive graffiti and other activities will not be tolerated. Please submit a report online through ServiceWorks or call the graffiti hotline at 303-774-4327. Calls will be responded to Monday through Friday within 48 hours. If you see graffiti in progress, call 9-1-1. Useful information you can provide includes a description of those involved and their vehicle description (if there is one). Do not approach those involved in what you believe is an illegal activity. More information on graffiti removal can be found on the Longmont website and searching “graffiti.”

Author Talk with Finn Murphy

The best-selling author of “The Long Haul” returns with the story of ditching his truck to seek his fortune … in hemp. Author Finn Murphy will discuss his new book “Rocky Mountain High: A Tale of Boom and Bust in the New Wild West” from 6:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 17 in the Civic Center, City Council Chambers, 350 Kimbark St. Pivoting away from growing hemp himself, Murphy decides to make himself a middleman, assembling an eclectic crew of workers, including the wry and vastly talented Manuel, the business savvy Pierce, and a scruffy army of “trimmigrants” — specialized farm laborers who roam the country pursuing (or not) their own American Dreams. This free event requires registration at the Library Programs webpage.

Register for Fall Recreation activities

Look for Recreation’s Fall 2023 brochure online now on the Rec webpage. The Fall brochure contains activities, fitness classes, programs, and special events that occur between September and December. Registration begins Tuesday, Aug. 1 and the printed brochure will be mailed to Longmont households the week of Aug. 7. For more information, call 303-774-4700.
