Be Snow Savvy This Winter
Love it or hate it, snow, ice and freezing temperatures are a fact of life in Colorado. Ensure you’re ready by following the Snow Savvy Guidelines. During a storm event in Longmont, updates will be posted to the Winter Weather Road Report webpage. If you do have to travel, use designated snow routes and reduce your speed in snow and ice conditions. Reckless driving and high speeds are the number one cause of most winter accidents. Remember that bridge crossings are highly susceptible to freeze over first. Take a look at our Street Snow Cams to get a real-time look at road conditions around town.

Safety Tips: Wood-Burning Fireplaces
With colder weather slowly moving in, many of us enjoy wood burning fireplaces to heat our homes. However, every year there are 10-15 dumpster fires in the Longmont city limits directly related to improper disposal of hot ashes. Ash and coals can continue to generate heat for an additional four days or more and can even ignite a fire with minimal materials in a residential poly cart or larger metal trash bins. Make sure to place ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least 3 feet in distance away from the structure. Have your wood burning fireplace cleaned and inspected at least once a year — heavy use can cause soot and creosote to build up quickly.
