This Week in Longmont – December 21, 2018

City Holiday Schedule
Longmont city government observes the Christmas holiday on Tuesday, December 25. All City facilities will be closed. Trash, recycling and composting collection will be one day later than usual following the holiday. On Monday, December 24, the Waste Diversion Center will be closed, the St. Vrain Memorial Building and Longmont Recreation Center will close at 3 pm, and the Ice Pavilion will close at 4 pm.

Beware of Phone Scams
Longmont is seeing scammers who are able to make it appear as if they are calling from a legitimate number, including the City of Longmont. DO NOT give out any personal, credit card or bank information to the caller. If there is some question that this call could be from a company you have a relationship with, tell the caller you are hanging up the phone and contacting the company directly. Look up the phone number yourself and place a separate call to that place of business. Do not rely on the caller to provide the phone number to you. See more at https://www.longmontcolorado.gov/Home/Components/News/News/7972/3.

Register Now for Nature Storytime
Get out of the house and keep the learning coming by registering your children for Nature Storytime at the Library, 409 4th Avenue. Beginning December 27, Miss Margaret will host stories, songs, games, and hands-on activities that explore local nature from 10:15 to 11 am every fourth Thursday of the month. All ages are welcome, but the program is geared for preschoolers to age 9, and adults must accompany all participants. If you’re part of a school group that includes more than five children, email in advance so that enough supplies are available. Registration is required at bit.ly/LibStories. No email? Call 303-651-8477 to register.

New! Winter Adult Coed Volleyball
Get your dig, bump and spike on! Adults and teens age 16 and older can play in Recreation’s new coed volleyball league (6v6) on Sunday nights from January 6 through February 24 at the Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Avenue. The cost is $275 per team or $46 for a free agent. To register, visit the Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Road. Registration ends January 1.

Recycle Your Holiday Tree …
From December 26 through January 6 the City of Longmont provides four satellite Christmas tree drop-off locations: Roosevelt Park – parking lot on the south side of 8th Avenue (by pool), Garden Acres Park – parking lot at 18th Avenue and Tulip Street, Kanemoto Park – parking lot off of S. Pratt Parkway at S. Coffman Street, and Centennial Park – parking lot at Alpine Street and Verdant Circle. Please remove all decorations and light strands. You also can recycle your tree at the Waste Diversion Center, 140 Martin Street, from 7:30 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Saturday. For more information visit LongmontColorado.gov/WasteServices or call 303-651-8416.

… Then Recycle the Rest of Your Holiday
You can recycle more than just your tree after the holidays! From December 26 through January 5, the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street accepts wrapping paper, which is not accepted in your curbside container. (No metallic paper, ribbons, bows, ornaments, tissue paper, or paper covered in tape.) And from December 26 through January 18, you can recycle your old holiday lights at the Waste Diversion Center. Wrap light strands into a ball and drop in the appropriate container. Please take identification and your most recent City utility bill to show that you’re a City Waste Services customer. For more information about when and where to recycle specific items, ask the Waste Wizard at bit.ly/longmont-wastewizard.

There’s a Lot Going on at the Ice Pavilion
The Longmont Ice Pavilion in Roosevelt Park at 725 8th Avenue is a seasonal outdoor ice rink offering ice skating and party facilities through early March. Youth hockey league registration is accepted throughout the season, and the next session of learn-to-skate classes for youth and adults begins in early January. Extended open skate hours begin December 24 during the school holiday break. Visit LongmontColorado.gov/ice-pavilion for more information, including special free skate rental days.
