Shovel snow into vegetated areas
Protect waterways after winter storms by shoveling snow onto vegetated areas and limiting the amount of de-icer you use at home. Melting snow will carry deicers and other pollutants into storm drains that drain directly to nearby streams. De-icers of any kind will negatively affect the environment in large quantities. If using a de-icer, apply it as soon as snowy or icy conditions appear.
Clean out your compost bin
As these sunny winter days come, you may be looking at cleaning out your compost bin. When washing compost containers, dump wash water directly into landscape areas or into indoor sink drains. Do not allow wash water to enter roads or storm drains to prevent nutrients and bacteria from entering our waterways. Use biodegradable and/or phosphate-free soap and cleaning products. Learn more about keeping our waterways clean.

Do you have children’s bikes that need new homes?
Drag those bicycles out of your garage and sheds and dust them off. The volunteers will be accepting bicycles with wheel sizes ranging from 12” to 24” (new or used) that you no longer want. Functional bikes preferred (flat tires are ok). Longmont’s dedicated group of volunteers will provide maintenance to ready these bikes for distribution to new youth owners in the spring.
Residents can donate bicycles at Longmont Fire Station 1, 3, 4, and 5 from Monday, September 11, 2023, until Sunday, December 10, 2023. We can not accept bicycles outside of this time frame.
Please note: Please do not take bicycles to Longmont Fire Station 2 or 6. Crews will be moving into these new fire stations in the near future. Find a fire station near you.
