This Week in Longmont – January 1, 2021
Recycle Your Holiday
The City offers several opportunities through January 6 for residents to recycle holiday materials. Christmas trees can be dropped off at Roosevelt, Garden Acres, Kanemoto and Centennial parks. Please remove all decorations and lights. Special bins will be set up at the Waste Diversion Center (WDC), 140 Martin Street, for wrapping paper and holiday lights; Christmas trees also are accepted. Cooking oil and white Styrofoam block #6 are accepted at the WDC year round. For more information, visit bit.ly/recycle-the-holidays or call 303-651-8416.
Book Discussion Podcast from the Library
Pop in your earbuds and get ready for a new way to find book recommendations. At 8 am on Friday, January 8, the Longmont Public Library’s new podcast “Book Chatter” will premiere with Longmont librarians discussing “Golem Girl: A Memoir” by Riva Lehrer. On the second Friday of each month thereafter, another new 30-to-60 minute episode featuring a different book and a rotating group of librarians will be available. See a list of upcoming titles plus details of how readers can participate in the podcast at bit.ly/LibPrograms. “Book Chatter” is intended for adults; some reading material and discussion topics may be unsuitable for those under age 18. Find Book Chatter on Spotify, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Teen Volunteer Program at the Library

Participants work on self-driven projects of interest to them and beneficial to the Library. Applications are due by 5 pm on Monday, January 18, and the program begins with an online meeting on Monday, January 25. Find program details and how to apply at bit.ly/TeenVols or call 303-651-8477.
Virtual Discovery Days at the Museum
Discovery Days encourages children ages 2 – 6 and their caregivers to learn together through engaging hands-on activities. To keep our littlest learners safe, the Museum now presents Discovery Days in a virtual format. Virtual Discovery Days is a two-part program that includes a Monthly-at-Home Craft Kit for purchase and virtual crafting and story time sessions that match the crafts and themes in the kits. Sessions run January 20 – April 30 at 10 am and at 11 am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Learn more at LongmontMuseum.org or call 303-651-8374.
Be Snow Savvy to Protect Our Water
Protect our waterways by shoveling snow onto vegetated areas and minimizing the amount of deicer you use at home. Melting snow carries deicers and other pollutants into storm drains that drain directly to nearby streams. If using a deicer, apply it as soon as snowy or icy conditions appear. Deicers help break the bond between ice and pavement to make shoveling easier. They do not evaporate the snow and ice, so adding more doesn’t eliminate the need to shovel.
