City Council Open Forum
The January 17 city council meeting, beginning at 7 pm in the Council Chambers at 350 Kimbark Street, will be an Open Forum for residents to talk for 5 minutes each to council members about any topic on their minds. This is the only agenda item for this meeting; plan to arrive a little early to put your name on the list of speakers. Honoring Dr. King
The community is invited to “All Cultures One Voice: Honoring Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.” from 9 am to noon on Monday, January 16, at Silver Creek High School, 4901 Nelson Road. Tree Recycling
Through January 8 the City of Longmont provides four satellite Christmas tree drop-off locations: Roosevelt Park – parking lot south of 8th Avenue, Garden Acres Park – west side of parking lot off 18th Avenue, Kanemoto Park – parking lot off of S. Pratt Parkway, and Centennial Park – east parking lot off of Alpine Street. Please remove all holiday decorations and light strands. You also can recycle your tree at the Waste Diversion Center, 140 Martin Street, from 7:30 am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Saturday. Mix and Mingle with Creative Crafters
The Longmont Public Library will host a new meet-up for creative crafters from 10 am to noon every first and third Saturday of the month beginning January 7. Adults and older teens who are working on a craft project are invited to bring their knitting, sewing, drawing, crocheting, scrapbooking, or other creative endeavor to the new “Make & Mingle” craft time and enjoy some like-minded company as they create. Crafters and makers are asked to bring whatever they’re working on plus their own supplies. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided. No registration is necessary.
Free Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge
Basketball fans ages 6-13 (as of April 30, 2017) can exhibit their skills at the free Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge competition at 1 pm on Saturday, January 7, at the Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Road. Boys and girls compete in separate divisions in dribbling, passing and shooting. Top scorers in each age group will advance to a sectional, then state championship competition, and those winners will get tickets to a Denver Nuggets game. Experience Buffalo Bill at the Library
Professional reenactor and impersonator Jeff Norman brings his one-man “Buffalo Bill Experience” to the Longmont Public Library from 7 to 8 pm on Thursday, January 12. This “edu-tainment” show is full of all the wagon train-driving, Army-scouting, Indian-fighting, and Pony Express-riding tales that made Buffalo Bill an American icon. “Going the Distance: Financing Your Business”
Lewis Hagler with the Colorado Enterprise Fund and Monty Meduna from First National Bank will discuss ways to finance your business with debt, from traditional bank and SBA loans to nontraditional lending sources, including the Longmont Small Business Lending Program and Colorado Enterprise Fund lending programs. This free event is from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, January 10, at the Longmont Public Library, 409 4th Avenue.
If you’re a landlord you probably have – or you surely will – experience a hoarding situation. Jennifer Hanzlick of Clutter Truckers will discuss extreme and hoarding clean-up in a free seminar from 6:30 to 8:15 pm on Wednesday, January 11, at the Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Avenue. Itty Bitty City Resumes January 13
Your toddlers and preschool-age children will enjoy indoor fun from 9 to 11 am on Fridays through May 12 at the St. Vrain Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Avenue. There are plenty of toys and room to move in the gymnasium. Itty Bitty City is for children ages 6 months to 5 years with a parent; no older children please. The drop-in fee is $2 per child, and a 10-visit pass is available for $17. Call 303-651-8404 for more information.
Shred Your Private Documents for Free
Longmont residents can safely and securely recycle private documents at this free event. Take boxed or bagged papers to be shredded to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, January 14. This is for residential documents only; business materials will not be accepted. Please also take ID and a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill. Longmont city government observes the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday on Monday, January 16. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Development Services Center, Library, Museum, Senior Center, Youth Center, and Waste Diversion Center. All recreation facilities except the St. Vrain Memorial Building will be open regular hours. Trash and recycling will be collected one day later than usual during the week.
