West Nile Found in Longmont
Boulder County Public Health has confirmed that mosquitoes in a mosquito pool in northwest Longmont have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). Longmont’s mosquito control contractor began spraying for mosquitoes in specific neighborhoods on July 14 for two reasons – Nile Virus positive mosquitoes were discovered in Larimer County and Longmont traps exceeded 100 mosquitoes. Longmont Fireworks Response Forum
In the two-week period leading up to July 4 Longmont Public Safety received hundreds of calls for illegal fireworks. Finding available staff for fireworks complaints can be a challenge. Residents are invited to a discussion of fireworks enforcement for 2017 from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, July 18, in the City Council Chambers at 350 Kimbark Street. Seating is limited. Free Community Night at Sandstone Ranch
Bring your picnic, chairs and blankets and enjoy the acoustic Americana music of Tilia Americana from 5:30 to 6:20 pm on Tuesday, July 19, at the Sandstone Ranch Visitors & Learning Center, 3001 Sandstone Drive. Meet Carmella, the Miniature Therapy Horse
The Longmont Library’s Storytime welcomes special guest Carmella, a 30” tall therapy horse and community ambassador from the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Tuesday, July 19. Carmella and her staff will help children understand the importance of therapy animals to those who need them. This special event does not require registration and will be held at the Library at 409 4th Avenue.
Doctor Noize at the Library
Take a morning break with the kids and head to the Library from 10 to 10:45 am on Thursday, July 21, for a fun musical performance with national kids’ sensation Doctor Noize. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the fun on the Library’s west patio at 409 4th Avenue. Registration is not required.
Build Community in Your Neighborhood
National Night Out (NNO) on Tuesday, August 2, brings neighbors together and strengthens community partnerships with local police and fire departments. It’s easy to host your own neighborhood event. Visit LongmontColorado.gov and search “National Night Out,” then complete the simple application. Although National Night Out is August 2, Longmont public safety personnel will attend any NNO event in August. So, plan your event, invite your neighbors, and enjoy the evening!
Art on the Move Dedication Celebration
The Art in Public Places Commission will host a free bike tour of the new Art on the Move artworks beginning at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 16, leaving from St. Stephen’s Plaza, 500 Main Street. Following the tour, the public is invited to a dedication celebration at 5 pm, also in St. Stephen’s Plaza, where you can meet some of the artists and learn more about Longmont’s public art. Free Shredding Event on Saturday
Recycle personal documents safely and securely at this free event. Bring boxed or bagged papers to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, July 16. Also bring ID and a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill. This event is for residential documents only; business materials will not be accepted. Open Cabin Days at Old Mill Park
Come visit life in the St. Vrain Valley in the 1800s at Old Mill Park located at 237 Pratt St., on Saturday July 16 from 10 am to 1 pm. Docents in period costume provide a personal look into the lives of pioneers. View the Affolter Cabin (1860), the Billings Cabin (1890) and the Hauke Milk House (1860) – all structures moved to the park from the surrounding area. You may also see a 1924 Model T with playing calliope, the art of cheese making, demonstrations of weaving and spinning, and much more! Bring a picnic lunch – tables are available for your use in the park. This is a fundraiser for the St. Vrain Historical Society; donations are appreciated to help preserve the park. FREE Kids Bicycle Rodeo
Come to the City of Longmont’s bicycle rodeo on July 18 from 9 am to noon at Izaak Walton clubhouse located at 18 S. Sunset. A bicycle rodeo offers a variety of activities for children that teach bicycle handling skills in a safe and contained environment. This rodeo is appropriate for children 4-11, though some activities may be more/less appropriate depending on age and ability. Pre-registration is encouraged, as is biking to the actual event! The first 50 kids who pre-register will receive a FREE goody bag, as will ALL KIDS who bike to the event.
