City Council Moves Back to Civic Center
The Longmont City Council is scheduled to restart in-person meetings on Tuesday, June 29 at 7 pm in the Longmont Civic Center located at 350 Kimbark Street. The public is invited to attend and there will be no masking or social distance requirements, per the updated State orders, although it is still recommended that unvaccinated folks wear a mask. In addition, the second of two open forums in 2021 is scheduled for Tuesday, July 20 at the Civic Center. Due to the pandemic, council meetings have been held virtually during the past year.
Skyline Kiwanis Hosting Fireworks Show
The Longmont Skyline Kiwanis are hosting a private party at the Fox Hill Country Club on July 4 at approximately 9:45 pm. and includes a fireworks display that has been permitted by Boulder County. This light display will be launched from the golf course in unincorporated Boulder County and will likely will be seen from many areas of Longmont. The public will not be permitted on the Fox Hill Golf Course as spectators and residents in the immediate area are asked to stay home and view the show from your own property. CDOT to Close a Portion of Main Street in Downtown Longmont for Railroad Crossing Repairs
From Monday, June 14, through Friday, June 25, US Highway 287/Main Street in downtown Longmont is scheduled to be closed by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue for repairs to the BNSF railroad crossing. Work will include: replacing the railroad ballast, ties, rails and the concrete surface crossing panels at the 1st Avenue and US Highway 287 crossing. See the news release.
In-person Coffee with Council Scheduled for June 26
Coffee with Council returns to in-person meetings beginning Saturday, June 26 at 9 am at the Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Avenue. Join at least two Council members and talk with them on any topic of your choice – and the coffee’s on us! Due to the pandemic, Coffee with Council meetings have been held virtually during the past year.
Free Community Night: LOCO Ukuleles
Enjoy a fun-filled, toe-tapping time singing to the music of LOCO Ukuleles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, at the scenic Sandstone Ranch Visitors & Learning Center, 3001 Sandstone Drive. This is a free outdoor family event. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. featuring lawn games and a coloring table. Bring a sack meal if desired and your own chairs and blankets. No pets. Community Virtual Mental Health Forum
The City’s Children, Youth & Families division in collaboration with the Longmont Public Library invite the community to a virtual forum about mental health in our community from 6:15-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. The forum will feature community youth and parents who will discuss their experiences with mental health, particularly in the past year. Librarians will highlight books on Mental Health for kids, teens, and adults. Registration is required and can be found at bit.ly/LibPrograms or by calling 303-774-3760. Free Concert: Tierro Band with Bridget Law
The Longmont Museum’s outdoor courtyard is the perfect place to enjoy free, in-person summer concerts, with the Tierro Band with Bridget Law kicking off the season starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. This World Jam collaboration is a 7-piece live band with hints of electronica. Lawn chairs and blankets welcome. Alcohol and concessions available for sale (only alcohol purchased on site is allowed). Reservations are recommended at LongmontMuseum.org or call 303-651-8374.
Organize Now for National Night Out
The 2021 National Night Out crime-prevention event will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, in neighborhoods throughout Longmont. Many neighborhoods are hosting block parties and cookouts that include parades, flashlight walks and youth activities. National Night Out is a great way to build neighborhood unity, and stronger community ties make our neighborhoods safer. West Nile Season Begins
The mosquito-borne West Nile virus can cause serious illness, even death. The City contracts for monitoring and adult spraying throughout summer. Spraying is performed when adult mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are detected within the Longmont area. To stay informed about monitoring results, the spraying schedule, and things you can do to prevent West Nile virus, visit LongmontColorado.gov/WestNile.
In the meantime, practice the “4 Ds” of West Nile Virus Prevention:
- Use Deet or an alternative repellent
- Dress in long sleeves and pants
- Avoid outdoor activities between dusk until dawn
- Drain standing water (i.e. birdbaths, outdoor planter, tires stored outside, etc.)
