Longmont Named All-America City for Second Time
The City of Longmont was awarded the prestigious All-America City Award from the National Civic League (NCL). The award recognizes Longmont for identifying its most challenging issues and working collaboratively with the community to create innovative and effective problem-solving strategies. Longmont is one of only ten cities nationwide to receive this prestigious award. This is the second time Longmont has received this designation, previously winning the award in 2006.
City Holiday Schedule on Wednesday
Longmont city government observes the Independence Day holiday on Wednesday, July 4. Most City facilities will be closed. The Longmont Recreation Center and Roosevelt Pool will be open from 10 am to 4 pm. Kanemoto Pool will be open from 10 am to 7 pm, and Sunset Pool will be open from 9 to 10 am for lap swim and from 10 am to 5 pm for open swim. Wednesday and Thursday trash, recycling and composting collection will be one day later than usual.
Celebrate the 4th with Music and Fireworks
Begin your holiday fun at noon on Wednesday, July 4, with a picnic and the annual free holiday concert by the Longmont Symphony Orchestra at Thompson Park, 4th Avenue and Bross Street. Then, at about 9:30 pm, enjoy the explosion of fireworks over Longmont. The best view is from within one mile of the Boulder County Fairgrounds. Handicap-accessible parking is available at the fairgrounds’ south Nelson Road entrance with permit. Text LOCO4th to 888777 for daily information on the fireworks show. Enjoy a week of summer fun with a make-and-take craft at Maker Mondays, 2 to 4 pm on July 2. Head back to the Library on Friday, July 6, for the free Friday Family Film, “Sing.” Tickets are handed out beginning at 1:30 pm. There will not be a Live! at the Library performance this week. These programs all are held at the Library at 409 4th Avenue. Registration is not required, but children age 9 and younger must be accompanied by a dedicated caretaker.
Free Friday Fitness Classes in the Park
Mix up your workouts by taking them outside! Join Longmont Recreation & Golf Services for free classes at parks throughout the city. Classes meet near or in the parking lot, and there is no child care available. For ages 18 and older. July classes at 9 am on Fridays include Tai Chi at Willow Farm Park, 901 S. Volunteer at Rhythm on the River
More than 200 community volunteers are the very pulse of Rhythm on the River. This year’s festival is July 13 and 14 at Roger’s Grove, 220 Hover Street. Volunteer shifts are between 5:30 and 10:30 pm each day, and all volunteers receive an official keepsake T-shirt to wear at the event. Recruiting On-scene Victim Advocates
The Longmont Police Department Victim Services Program is seeking volunteer victim advocates to provide crisis intervention, support and referrals to victims of crime and traumatic incidents. Training covers a wide variety of topics that also can be used in everyday life. Consider volunteering if you are interested in learning about crisis intervention and the criminal justice system. Get ready to GLOW at the Roger’s River Run 5K, sponsored by UCHealth at 7:30 pm on Friday, July 13, during Rhythm on the River at Roger’s Grove, 220 Hover Street. Wear your glow and party apparel, and run, walk or dance the 5K all the way to the finish line, followed by after-race goodies, glow-tastic specialty awards, and the Overall Male and Female award ceremony. Early-bird registration fees by noon on July 12 are $20 for adults/$15 for youth 14 and younger and seniors 60 and older. Race day fees increase $5 on a space available basis.
