NCAR Explorer Series: Atmospheric Rivers in a Changing Climate

Join the Longmont Museum for a free talk with NCAR scientist Christine Shields this Thursday at 7 pm. A typical atmospheric river transports more than double the flow of the Amazon river, and when they make landfall, can produce heavy rain or snow. Figuring out how global warming will alter this important part of Earth’s water cycle is a key challenge for planning around our future water resources. Learn more and make free reservations at  the Longmont Museum website or by calling 303-651-8374.

Help Make Longmont’s Streets Safer

Longmont recently launched Vision Zero to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries and increase options for safe and equitable transportation. Success is dependent on community support and there are a number of ways to get involved. Learn about a new task force and sign up to receive email updates at longmontcolorado.gov/visionzero.

Keep Our Streams Clean

Be a good neighbor and keep fallen leaves out of nearby streams. Rain and melting snow will carry leaves through storm drains directly to local waterways. The nutrients in leaves can harm aquatic ecosystems but are great for composting. Collect fallen leaves and take them to community drop-off events or municipal facilities, or better yet, use your leaves as protective mulch on your lawn, trees, and plants!

Volunteer for the Longmont Turkey Trot

Support, motivate and keep the racers safe! Families, friends, seniors, adults, and high school students who are trying to earn volunteer hours are invited to lend a hand during the annual Longmont Turkey Trot at Altona Middle School from 8-11 am on Saturday, Nov. 9. All volunteers receive an event t-shirt and breakfast snacks.  Email sam.calhoon@longmontcolorado.gov or call 303-651-8404 for more information.

Sign up your Neighborhood or Business for a Be Ready workshop

You can handle the disruptions that disasters cause by signing up for a Be Ready Longmont workshop! The Longmont Office of Emergency Management staff can teach your neighborhood, business, or group to “Be Ready” for disasters. Be Ready will teach you how to make sure you are notified of a disaster, how to prepare for emergencies and disasters, how to build strong, resilient communities by connecting your family to neighbors and connect you with additional resources and new learning opportunities. ASL and Spanish interpretation are available if requested five or more business days in advance. Contact Longmont OEM to schedule your workshop at oem@longmontcolorado.gov or 303-774-3793.

New Flood Insurance Rate Maps May Change Your Property’s Floodplain Status

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will officially adopt the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Weld and Boulder Counties this fall. The Weld County FIRMs will become effective on Sept. 26, while the Boulder County FIRMs will become effective on Oct. 24. Once they are effective, the official floodplain map will reflect these changes and some properties will change flood zone. Any building that will be in the 1% annual chance (100-year) floodplain and have a federally backed mortgage will be required to carry flood insurance. To check the flood zone for your property under the new maps, please visit the City of Longmont’s Floodplain Inquiry Map. The City of Longmont participates in the Community Rating System (CRS), and as such, residents qualify for a 25% discount on flood insurance premiums. Ask your insurance agent to provide a quote for flood insurance to you. You can find more information about flood insurance on the City’s Flood Insurance webpage.
