Events & Happenings

Halloween Parade & Trick-or-Treat Street

Dress up in your Halloween costume, march down Main Street, and visit Downtown participating merchants afterward for Trick-or-Treat Street this Saturday, Oct. 28! Kids and adults of all ages can be a part of Longmont’s annual free costume foot parade. Parade line-up begins at 9:45 am (10 am start) at Roosevelt Park, 700 Longs Peak Ave. No registration is required. Strollers or wagons are recommended for tiny feet; no motorized vehicles are allowed. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed (no large animals please). See the parade map at the Halloween webpage. Call 303-651-8404 with questions.

Clean up your leaves and winterize sprinklers

Be a good neighbor and keep fallen leaves out of nearby streams. Rain and melting snow will carry leaves through storm drains directly to local waterways. The nutrients in leaves can harm aquatic ecosystems but are great for composting. Collect fallen leaves and take them to community drop-off events or municipal facilities. Freezing winter weather is no friend to home and business sprinkler systems. Water left in the system through freezing temperatures can damage both the system and even your home, causing damaged pipes, flooding, and more. Learn how to drain and blow out your sprinklers from CSU Extension.

Longmont Museum Art & Sip: Art of Collage

Feel the nostalgia of classic cut and paste collage-making as we decorate small canvases or metal tins with collaged materials and mod podge in the Longmont Museum’s “The Art of Collage” class on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 pm, part of their weekly adult Art & Sip program. These classes are designed to guide beginners as well as bring new skills to experienced artists and crafters. $40. Register online at the Longmont museum website or by calling 303-651-8374.

Learn about Longmont’s energy future

Take the opportunity to find out more about our community’s energy future. On Nov. 13, the Longmont Museum will host a free community session on the 2024 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process for Platte River Power Authority, Longmont’s wholesale electric provider owned by Longmont, Loveland, Estes Park and Fort Collins. Once complete in 2024, this plan will serve as a road map for continuing to provide electricity that is reliable, financially sustainable and environmentally responsible. The session starts at 6:30 pm in the Longmont Museum’s Kaiser C Classroom. Find out more about the IRP on their website.

Work for Longmont Recreation

Help prep our athletic fields for play; teach kids the FUNdamentals of sports or how to ice skate — We are now hiring for lifeguards, grounds maintenance techs, front desk staff, hockey coaches, youth sports officials, field supervisors and more! Climate Action Sunday: Revolutionizing Energy

On Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 pm, the City’s Sustainability Office and the Longmont Museum invite you to the FREE “Revolutionizing Energy” Climate Action event. We’ll screen the documentary short film “Backlight: Beyond the Green Horizon.” Then, we’ll take a local look at the future of energy. Learn how your electric provider, Longmont Power & Communications, acquires and distributes energy generated by Platte River Power Authority. We’ll explore how these organizations are working together toward a 100% non-carbon-energy mix by 2030. The event also includes learning activities for kids, a resource fair, and energy-efficiency giveaways. Reservations recommended; visit the CAS wepgae or call 303-774-4436.

Visit the Sandstone Visitors Center

Don’t miss your last chance this season to visit the historic Sandstone Ranch Visitors Center, 3001 Sandstone Drive. Admission is free; donations welcome. Make sure to water your trees!

Fall in Colorado can be dry, so it is extremely important to water trees. Soil moisture insulates tree roots and supports the tree’s ability to survive cold snaps. Aim to water trees and shrubs once per month from October through March if there hasn’t been about 1 inch of natural precipitation. Apply water midday when the temperature is above 40 degrees. Water the area using a hose end sprinkler, extending from the base of the tree to the edge of the longest branches in the tree canopy. As a general survival rule, apply 10 gallons of water for each diameter inch of the tree. Learn more about fall and winter watering at CSU Extension.
