Don’t Forget to Vote
Elections in Colorado are conducted by mail ballot with Voter Service and Polling Center locations available for those who need additional assistance with voting or who would like to vote in person. Voters can also use Service Centers to register to vote or update their registration, turn in a mail ballot, request a replacement ballot, or vote using equipment and facilities for persons with disabilities. Vote before 7 pm on November 3. Four Voter Service and Polling Centers are available to service Boulder County voter needs. To see locations and for more information visit www.BoulderCountyVotes.org.
Take Your Place on a City Board or Commission
If you would like to participate in the deliberation of topics that are important to the city, consider applying to serve on a volunteer advisory board. Persons shall be eligible to serve who have lived in and been registered voters of the City of Longmont for one year prior to their appointment. For a list of openings and to apply, visit LongmontColorado.gov/board-application or call the City Clerk’s Office at 303-651-8649. The application deadline is 5 pm on Friday, October 30.
Join the Halloween Parade
Kids and adults of all ages can be part of Longmont’s free costume foot parade at 10 am on Saturday, October 31. Dress in your Halloween costume, march on Main Street, and visit participating merchants for Trick or Treat Street immediately following the parade. Lineup begins at 9:30 am at the Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Avenue. No registration is required, and strollers or wagons are recommended for tiny feet. No motorized vehicles are allowed. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and no large animals please. For more information, call 303-651-8404 or see the parade map at LongmontColorado.gov/rec.
Day of the Dead Family Celebration
The Longmont Museum’s annual DÃa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, October 31, demonstrates how a diverse community can come together to share a common desire – to honor our deceased loved ones and keep their memories alive. Enjoy live music and dance, sugar skull decorating, traditional food, community altars, paper flower making, face painting, Lady Catrina and more! Admission is free. For more information call 303-651-8374 or visit LongmontColorado.gov/museum.
Compost Your Halloween Pumpkins
Take your Halloween pumpkins to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street and toss them in the tree limb pile to be composted. The center is open from 7:30 am to 4:45 pm Monday through Saturday. There’s no charge if you present your ID and City of Longmont residential utility bill showing that you are a solid waste customer. For more information visit LongmontColorado.gov/solidwaste or call 303-651-8416.
Keep Broken Limbs from ‘Goblin’ Your Power This Halloween
A spooky Halloween in the shadows can be a lot of fun – unless a broken branch just turned off your lights for you. Have a professional trim your trees back and keep those limbs from haunting the power lines. And to make sure that a treat for your trees isn’t a trick for you, stay safe and don’t attempt the work yourself. If you need your power turned off temporarily for tree work, please call Longmont Power & Communications at 303-651-8386.
Curbside Fall Leaf Collection
During November, City solid waste services will conduct a special curbside collection of bagged leaves for residential customers. Guidelines: have bags at curbside before 7 am on the Monday of your leaf collection week (crews will collect bags throughout the week), bagged leaves on private property or in alleys will not be collected, and only one pass will be made through each neighborhood. Free leaf bags are available at the Waste Diversion Center, 140 Martin Street. There is a limit of 15 bags per address, while supplies last. Visit LongmontColorado.gov/solidwaste or call 303-651-8416 for the collection schedule for your neighborhood.
Tax Aide Volunteers Needed
Longmont Senior Services and AARP are seeking volunteers to help with screening and income tax preparation for e-filing for low- to moderate-income residents, senior citizens, and disabled taxpayers during the 2016 tax season. Training is provided. Call Kari at 303-651-8495 for more information.
