Holiday Closures on Monday
Longmont city government observes the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 4. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Development Services Center, Museum, Library, Senior Center, Youth Center, Waste Diversion Center, St. Vrain Memorial Building and Centennial Pool. The Library and Centennial Pool also will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, September 2 and 3. The Longmont Recreation Center will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunset Pool will be open for the final day of the season from 10 am to 5 pm. All trash, recycling, and composting will be collected one day later than usual during the week. For collection schedule questions, call 303-651-8416.
City Council Adds Three Items to Ballot
In addition to voting for a new mayor, three City Council seats, and the retention of the municipal judge, Longmont voters will see three City budget issues on the 2017 election ballot. Those questions ask voters to (1) increase the City’s 0.325 percent public safety sales and use tax to 0.58 percent for the purpose of hiring more police officers, dispatchers and firefighters, as well as funding equipment and facilities, (2) place a 3 percent sales tax on recreational marijuana sales within city limits, and (3) increase debt in an amount not to exceed $36,300,000 by the issuance of water enterprise revenue bonds to help finance water system improvements including the construction of a water storage reservoir as part of the Windy Gap Firming Project. Leading Edge Series for Start-ups
The Small Business Development Center and Longmont Economic Development Partnership will present the 10-part hands-on, step-by-step Leading Edge Entrepreneurship business planning program for start-up and early stage businesses. Test the feasibility of your idea, solidify your business model, and build a roadmap to profitability. Sessions are from 6 to 9 pm on Tuesdays beginning September 12 at 528 Main Street. Fall Swimming Lessons Begin
Fall swim and dive lessons begin after Labor Day at Centennial Pool and the Longmont Recreation Center. To find the correct class for you or your little swimmer, check out Recreation’s lesson descriptions in the fall activities brochure online at LongmontColorado.gov/rec, or call 303-651-8406 to talk to a swim lesson guru. You also can arrange a free swim lesson evaluation. Registration closes after the second day of class or when the class is full.
Upcoming Fun at Sandstone Ranch
The Sandstone Ranch Visitors & Learning Center at 3001 Sandstone Drive is housed in a historic house and offers a variety of family programs. From 10:30 am to noon on Saturday, September 9, enjoy stories and activities about fossils and “Dinosaurs in our Backyard.” Register online at bit.ly/ssrevents or call 303-651-8404. Suggested donations ($2/child, $4/adult) are collected at the event. Afterward, from 12:30 to 2 pm, join Bob Raynolds from Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison for a free “Geology Walk around Sandstone Ranch.” No registration is needed for the walk, and participants should meet in the upper parking lot above the Visitors Center.
The public is invited to the free Inclusive Communities Celebration from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, September 22, at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road. Monday, September 4, is the last day of the season to enjoy the outdoor Sunset Pool at 1900 Longs Peak Avenue. Special holiday hours are 10 am to 5 pm. Don’t miss this last opportunity for summer swimming.
