This Week in Longmont – September 16, 2016
Give Feedback on Funding for Water Supply
The City of Longmont is considering ways to fully fund its recently increased participation in the regional Windy Gap Firming Project, a new raw water storage reservoir to be constructed west of Carter Lake. Because this decision will affect water rates, the City is gathering feedback from the community. Visit bit.ly/windy-gap-funding for details on the project and financing options, as well as an online form for residents to submit comments. Your feedback will be presented to the city council in November or December as they determine which funding option to pursue.
Explore Creatures of the Night at the Library
From 7 to 8 pm on Thursday, September 22, the Longmont Public Library at 409 4th Avenue presents “Creatures of the Night.” Learn why some animals are nocturnal, why some insects appear only at night, and how some animals navigate in the dark. Nature’s Educators of Colorado will explore these fascinating creatures and bring some of them to see up close. This program is free and best for ages 6 and older. Registration is required; visit bit.ly/LibPrograms to reserve your place. No email or internet? Call 303-651-8472.
Inclusive Communities Celebration
The public is invited to the Inclusive Communities Celebration from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, September 30, at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road. This free annual event celebrates and promotes understanding of the many different cultures that are part of our Longmont community. It features performances, displays, and opportunities to connect with people of different cultures. For more information, visit the City’s website, call 303-651-8445 or email Carmen.Ramirez@LongmontColorado.gov.
Longmont Youth Council is Seeking Members
The Longmont Youth Council (LYC) is seeking new members in the 8th through 12th grades who live in the city of Longmont. The LYC has been involved in many projects, including Halloween for the Hungry, Tobacco Prevention, Diversity Day, Anti-Vandalism, and Sticker Shock, a campaign that raised awareness about the legal consequences of providing alcohol to minors. This is a fun and dynamic group, and motivated, committed students who would like to make a difference in our community are encouraged to apply. Meetings are held from 4 to 5 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Youth Center, 1050 Lashley Street. Visit the Youth Council’s webpage for an application. The deadline is 5 pm on Monday, September 26.
Incentives for Smart Commuters
This month Smart Commute is kicking off the next round of commuter incentives. If you commute through the new express lanes project construction zone – between 120th Avenue and Northwest Parkway/E470 – you may be eligible to receive some of these incentives. And if you’re a Longmont resident driving south on I-25 to Denver, take the bus for free! Smart Commute will give you a 10-ride ticket booklet to try out the Longmont Express route. There also are incentives for joining carpools and vanpools, too. Visit IDriveI25.com to sign up!
Celebrate Your Child’s Birthday with Rec Services
Children’s birthday party packages are available at the Longmont Recreation Center, St. Vrain Memorial Building and Centennial Pool. You can simply rent space, or you can have staff help plan and entertain during the event.
