Coffee with Council
Longmont City Council will host Coffee with Council from 9 to 10 am on Saturday, September 26, at Mr. Bean, 1844 Hover Street. At this event, you can talk informally with at least two council members on any topic of your choice, and the coffee’s on us! For more information call the City Clerk’s Office at 303-651-8649.
Free Shredding Event on Friday
Recycle personal documents safely and securely at this free event. Bring boxed or bagged papers to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Friday, September 18. Also bring ID and a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill. This event is for residential documents only; business materials will not be accepted. Would You Like to Serve Your Community?
If you would like to participate in the deliberation of topics that are important to the city, consider applying to serve on a volunteer advisory board. Persons shall be eligible to serve who have lived in and been registered voters of the City of Longmont for one year prior to their appointment. For a list of openings and to apply, visit LongmontColorado.gov/board-application or call the City Clerk’s Office at 303-651-8649. The application deadline is 5 pm on Thursday, September 24.
Public Invited to Artist Presentations
Four local artists have been selected as finalists to present their creative design proposals for the Main Street Bridge Project. The public is invited to see the presentations from 6 to 8:30 pm on Thursday, September 24, in the City Council Chambers at 350 Kimbark Street. Inclusive Communities Celebration
The community is invited to the Inclusive Communities Celebration from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, September 25, at the Longmont Museum’s Stewart Auditorium, 400 Quail Road. Discover, experience and enjoy the various cultures and organizations that make Longmont a diverse community as well as free food, art, performances and information from around the world. If you’re 50 or older or if you care for someone who is, plan to attend the open house at the Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Avenue, from 10 am to noon on Saturday, September 26. Pharmaceutical Take Back Event
Drugs discarded down a drain can pass through the wastewater plant and into St. Vrain Creek untreated. Bring them instead to Longmont United Hospital at 1950 Mountain View Avenue between 8 am and 2 pm on Saturday, September 26, for free disposal. All pharmaceuticals will be accepted from residents. This includes pills, capsules, liquids, inhalers, and patches, and it’s for pharmaceuticals only; please no needles, thermometers, controlled substances, medical equipment, personal care products, or household hazardous wastes. Views & Brews Fall Film Series
This fall, the Longmont Museum’s Stewart Auditorium at 400 Quail Road will be the place to be on Thursday nights. From September 24 through November 5 galleries and exhibitions are open late (from 6 to 8 pm), and some of your favorite movies of the Halloween season will be showcased in the Views & Brews Fall Film Series. Each film screening will offer pre-show entertainment at 6 pm with local microbrews, wine and spirits available for purchase followed by the film at 7:15. Admission is $8 or $5 for Museum members. Rise of the Islamic State
Dr. Ian Feinhandler, geography faculty at Front Range Community College, will present an analysis of the rise of the self-titled “Islamic State” (also known by various acronyms, including ISIS, ISIL, and DAESH). Once seen as a minor off-shoot of al Qaeda, the Islamic State now controls significant portions of Syria and Iraq, has branches in Pakistan, Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Nigeria, and is recruiting across the Western world. In this lecture, on September 24 at 7 pm at the library, Dr. Feinhandler will examine the social, political, and economic factors that gave rise to this organization. Registration is not required.
Tree Climbing Championship in Longmont
Did you enjoy climbing trees as a kid? Come see how the professionals do it. Cheer on North America’s best professional tree climbers as they compete for the North American Champion titles in the beautiful trees of Thompson Park this Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20. There will be educational and fun activities for children and adults, plus food trucks on site.
