Volunteers wanted for LPC/ecobee thermostat program
On a hot summer day, demand for electricity soars. But up to 200 Longmont Power & Communications customers will soon have an opportunity to help dial that demand back … and to get a credit on their utility bill as a thank-you.
The new trial program – a partnership between LPC and ecobee, the sustainable smart home solutions provider – is open to any LPC customer with central air conditioning and an ecobee smart thermostat enrolled in the Smarter Summer program through eco+. For those who participate, ecobee thermostats will automatically adjust during specific energy saving events – periods of high electric demand – to save energy during that period. Customers will have the ability to opt out of each event if needed.
“Even small changes in energy use during peak times can make a big difference, both for our customers and for our entire electric system,” said LPC executive director David Hornbacher. “If we see the possibility for a big change from this demonstration, we may expand the program next year and invite more people to voluntarily participate.”
All participants will receive a $50 bill credit for signing up. Those who take part in at least 75 percent of the energy saving events will get an additional $25 credit after the program ends.
The program begins June 1 and runs through the end of September. Those interested can begin to sign up on Earth Day (April 22) through the ecobee app. Participants must sign up by May 31; the offer is limited to the first 200 eligible Longmont Power & Communications customers who sign up.
“ecobee is proud to partner with the City of Longmont and help Longmont Power & Communications customers to participate in this exciting program,” said Shawn Peterson, energy partnerships lead with ecobee. “eco+ helps our partners realize the impact of a smarter, responsive home – which is a critical piece to a resilient, clean energy future.”
