PRESS RELEASE – On July 26, 2016, the Longmont Police Department, with assistance from the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, applied for and received arrest warrants on two unrelated vehicle versus bicycle crashes.

In the first investigation, the driver, a Longmont resident, age 20, was involved in a crash which resulted in the death of bicyclist, Peyton Knowlton, age 8. (Longmont case number 16-4413). This crash occurred on May 20, 2016 at approximately 3:20 p.m. at 17th Ave and Alpine St. The driver has an arrest warrant for the following charges: vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of drugs (DUID), criminal possession of a forged instrument, prohibited use of a weapon, failing to stop for a traffic control signal at place required, failed to yield right of way to a pedestrian at steady walk signal, possession of alcohol by an under age person, unlawful possession of marijuana by an underage person and unlawful possession of marijuana paraphernalia by an underage person.

In the second investigation, the Longmont Police Department also received an arrest warrant for the driver, a Denver resident, age 24, who was involved in a crash which resulted in the death of City of Longmont employee, bicyclist, Shane Swope, age 46. (Longmont case number 16-5513). This crash occurred on June 21, 2016 at approximately 12:10 p.m. at 17th Ave and Gay St. The driver has an arrest warrant for the following charges: careless driving resulting in death and driving a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Both drivers are expected to surrender on the arrest warrants by the end of the week. Each driver has cooperated with the investigation from the beginning and remained on-scene following these tragic crashes. Speed was not a factor in either crash. A copy of the arrest warrant and state accident report will be made available for each case, once the driver is in custody.

These were extremely complex investigations, requiring crash reconstruction, reenactments, extensive toxicology testing, and multiple witness interviews. During this thorough crash investigation the Longmont Police Department Traffic team worked closely with Detectives, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, the Boulder County Coroner’s Office and the vehicle manufactures.
