Water lines in Longmont classified as “non-lead”

Longmont has confirmed the City’s water system poses no risk of lead contamination.

The City of Longmont conducted a thorough investigation of service lines in its water system at the direction of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The City of Longmont’s water service line investigation resulted in a “non-lead” classification for all service lines in the potable water distribution system.  The City’s treated drinking water surpassed both state and federal standards.  Longmont continues to conduct regular testing to ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable drinking water to our residents.

In 2021, the EPA announced updates to drinking water regulations requiring water systems to investigate the materials of water service lines in their system and develop a comprehensive inventory by October 2024. To comply with this regulation, the City of Longmont began an in-depth investigation of the City’s water lines to include:

  • Reviewed all available historical records related to existing water lines
  • Verified pipe material for a representative number of service lines
  • Evaluated reliability of historical records review
  • Submitted findings to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment

Annual reports indicate water leaving Longmont’s water treatment facility is effectively lead-free, and our water testing confirms there is no lead coming from water supplies or the City’s water main lines. Longmont’s water is also treated to reduce corrosion potential, reducing the risk for lead to enter your water.
