“Wopo Holup: The Chesapeake” exhibit opens in Longmont Museum Portal Gallery
LONGMONT, Colo. – Lyons, Colorado, and New York-based artist Wopo Holup’s work “2+ 2020 The Chesapeake” opens at the Longmont Museum’s Portal Gallery on November 22. The 21-foot-long artwork is divided into 14 symmetrically hung pieces of vellum and illustrates the complete reshaping of the landscape that would occur with a rise in sea level of up to two feet from the Chesapeake Bay south to Pamlico Sound.
“It’s hanging on the perfect wall,” Holup said of her work’s placement in the Museum’s Portal Gallery. “The changing light from morning to evening is perfect for showing this piece.” Her drawings are inspired by science’s fractal geometry and are about nature’s flow – its branching and dividing. In this work, aluminum leaf illustrates current water levels along the East Coast, and yellow and red ochre paint show the one to two foot rise in sea level predicted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Wopo Holup has completed more than twenty public art commissions across the United States. Her work can been seen at the Philadelphia Zoo, Historic Battery Park in Manhattan, and the Tampa International Airport. She has had solo exhibitions in Massachusetts, New York, Missouri, and California.
