Construction of this building was authorized by the School Board of School District 17 (now known as District RE1) on December 6, 1877.  The building has served as a school continuously since its opening. This building was associated with the lives of the founders of Longmont and has served as an educational institution from the time of construction to the present. The school has contributed significantly to the cultural and educational enrichment of the community.
