Louis Frederick Steuerwald came to Longmont in the early 1890's after completing a "thorough course in dentistry" at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1891 with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Steuerwald opened an office on West Fourth Avenue, becoming Longmont's first dentist and the first oral surgeon with a Northern Colorado office. After less than five years in practice, Steuerwald had become successful enough to build this elegant home. There he lived with his wife Alice and his son and daughter. According to the Times-Call, John H. Empson, founder of the Empson Cannery boarded with the Steuerwalds for some time, perhaps while his home at 1228 3rd Avenue was being built in the early 1900's.
During his practice, Steuerwald was said to have been the originator of the "painless dentist," which brought patients to him from all over Northern Colorado.
