John Jr. was the son of John Lawrence Townley, first elected treasurer of the Chicago-Colorado Colony. John Jr. and his family arrived in Longmont in 1871 when he was 9-years-old. Nellie taught in the Longmont school system for 24 years as an English teacher at Longmont junior and senior high schools. Nellie is recognized as one of 16 graduating seniors of Longmont High School in 1905. She also was State Poetry Chairman for the Federation of Women's Clubs.
