This simple, yet majestic colonial home, located on a corner lot with tall, mature trees silhouetting it, was not so picturesque when first constructed in 1889. Several remodelings have enhanced its exterior and interior.

George A. Starbird came to Longmont in 1873 to be the Chicago-Colorado Colony Surveyor-Engineer. He was in his last year of engineering school at Illinois Northwestern University and left to fill the position when the colony surveyor died. In 1900, Mr. Starbird sold the property to John Hartman and moved his family to a 640 acre farm northeast of Longmont, where they lived for many years.

John Hartman came to the St. Vrain Valley to work on a farm near Pella until he bought his own farm on the northeast corner of Union Reservoir. John Hartman made many civic contributions and served as City Alderman from 1915 to 1919.
