1st & Main Transit Station

Overview

In 2005, RTD initiated the FasTracks project that included future commuter rail service to Longmont. In 2012, the City created a master plan for a rail station around 1st Avenue and Main Street. The plan considered future development potential and ways to connect the station to different transportation options, including bus service.

Since the plan was adopted, the City of Longmont and RTD have worked together to plan and build the transit station, including a bus terminal and parking garage. The five-story facility will include a bus station with 10 bus bays, about 700 parking spaces, bicycle storage, and connections to Longmont’s growing network of multimodal transportation options. It will support future Bus Rapid Transit service between Longmont and Boulder, plans for Front Range Passenger Rail and expanded pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.

A high-density mixed-use development will eventually wrap around the 1st and Main Transit Station along Main Street and 1st Avenue. That project is being developed through a public-private partnership and will include approximately 250 residential units above commercial space. Project Funding and Costs

The transit station project is supported by significant public and private investment and regional collaboration.

• $16.4 million – RTD contribution toward transit improvements
• $4 million – DOLA Transit-Oriented Communities Infrastructure Grant
• More than $17.6 million – City of Longmont purchase of the property and other project related costs
• The city will fund a significant portion of the project through certificates of participation that will be paid for through a combination of tax increment revenues from the redevelopment, private development parking fees, and city funds from the Public Improvement Fund and the Street Fund.
