This project will start construction Spring 2025 and be completed in Fall 2026
- The Greenway Trail between Boston Ave and Sunset St will be closed starting in June after spring runoff.
- Access to Izaak Walton Park, Clubhouse, and pond will available. Brief, infrequent closures will be required.
The Izaak Walton Reach 2 project will increase the channel capacity to safely contain 100-year flood water levels. Once work is completed in this reach, the floodplain to the north of the St. Vrain Creek will be mitigated, protecting lower downtown from future flood risk. The Greenway Trail will be reestablished as be a 10-ft wide concrete path with a 3-ft wide gravel shoulder.
Construction will start in Spring of 2025. The project is expected to take 18 months and will be complete in Fall 2026.
There are a variety of reasons that a project can be delayed. The primary cause in this case was the negotiation for acquiring the necessary land to construct the project. Once that was resolved, the project was advertised for construction and continued to move forward.
The park and clubhouse will be open most of the time. Notice about expected closures will be posted in the Project Status of this webpage. For the latest information about reserving the clubhouse please visit the Izaak Walton Clubhouse webpage. If you do reserve the clubhouse, please keep in mind that active construction will still be happening. Increased noise and trail access should be considered.
The greenway trail will be open through May until the end of spring runoff. This usually occurs in early to mid-June. Once the creek flow decreases, the trail will be closed and remain closed until the construction is complete Fall 2026.
The City does what we can to protect as many trees as possible. When a tree gets removed, there are a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is removed because it is not healthy and a risk of falling over. Most often a tree that is removed during construction needs to be taken down because it is in the way of the work being done. In the case of this project, the trail is going to be realigned to follow the top of the levee. A levee is not allowed to have trees grow out of it.
