Public Memorials

City of Longmont Policy for Roadside and Parks/Greenways Memorials

The City of Longmont recognizes the community’s need to memorialize loved ones lost in traffic-related accidents or in areas of public parks and greenways. While roadside memorials are a common form of grieving, and the City is sympathetic to these expressions of remembrance, it is also necessary to ensure public safety and maintain the intended use of parks and greenways.

General Provisions
  • Public Safety and Maintenance: Memorials must not create obstructions, unsafe conditions, or violate Longmont Municipal Code or City policy. They should not interfere with the visibility of roadways, traffic control devices, park pathways, or utilities.
  • Permanence and Attachments: Permanent fixtures or attachments to existing structures in a way that interferes with public space utilization are not permitted.
  • Maintenance of Public Space: Memorials should not generate litter, attract graffiti, or cause other nuisances. Any memorial deemed offensive or subject to continuous complaints will be removed.

Roadside Memorials

  • Duration: Roadside memorials are allowed for a period of 60 days following the incident.
  • Removal Notice: The City will post a removal notice at the memorial site 48 hours prior to removal. Removal notices will include City contacts who can help the family, friends and neighbors coordinate the removal with Parks staff.
  • Storage and Retrieval: Non-perishable items from removed memorials will be stored for one week. To arrange pickup, contact the City Customer Service Center at 303-651-8416.

Parks and Greenways Memorials

  • Duration: Memorials in parks and greenways are allowed for a period of 14 days following the incident to maintain the general public use and purpose of these areas.
  • Removal Notice: Similar to roadside memorials, a 48-hour notice will be posted prior to removal.
Private Property Memorials

The City does not oversee memorials on private property unless they violate public rules and regulations. This includes obstructions to transportation view corridors, traffic signs, and/or signals.
