General Information

contractor

You must be a licensed contractor in Longmont to do contracting work in the City (Longmont Municipal Code 16.48.030).

As a homeowner you may act as your own general contractor (GC) and do the work without a contractor's license if the property is your primary residence (can not be a rental property or a resale/flip).  This work includes basement finishes, kitchen remodels and general interior or exterior remodeling projects.  However, any work that involves room additions to the home with new foundations will require a licensed GC to pull the permit.   A licensed GC is required to build new homes, or accessory dwelling units (ADU) that may or may not be connected to the home.  For projects where the home owner is pulling a permit for interior remodeling any subcontractors doing HVAC, electrical wiring, plumbing or framing will be required to be Longmont licensed contractors.  You as a homeowner be issued a permit for subcontracted work; however, you are also responsible for inspections and sign-offs on the permit card.

Currently, the City of Longmont does not have reciprocal licensing agreements with any other jurisdiction. The City does honor however, a current test result certificate from the International Code Council. Tests are given at PearsonVue locations throughout the state. You may also find more information at the International Code Council website, www.iccsafe.org.
