Risk Management
The City of Longmont has extended its partnership with Weigh and Win to focus on reaching City employees and increasing awareness around the importance of worksite wellness. Thanks to support from Kaiser Permanente, a mobile Weigh and Win kiosk will be rotating quarterly between department buildings starting June 7. The kiosk will also be available to the public at specified community events.
“We are excited to further connect our employees with Weigh and Win,” said Sheena Campbell, Wellness Coordinator for the City of Longmont. “We want to make utilizing the local kiosks even easier by breaking down the barrier of accessibility for our staff.”
Weigh and Win is a free, measureable weight improvement program that pays Colorado adults (18 and older) to achieve a healthy weight. Each participant receives personalized email and/or text message health coaching including a daily meal plan, fitness plan, motivational tips and a weekly grocery list. Unlimited access to Weigh and Win health coaches is also provided, via phone or email. Cash incentives are distributed to those who begin the program with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater. Participants who join with a healthy BMI (less than 25) are eligible for monthly prize drawings.
Participant progress is tracked through quarterly weigh-ins at community kiosk locations. The kiosk takes a validated weight measurement, BMI reading and a full-length photograph – providing a visual progress report of the participant’s weight improvement.
Since June 2012, a permanent Weigh and Win kiosk has been located at the City of Longmont Public Library (409 4th Ave.) and available to the community. According to the library’s 2016 quarter one data, the average Longmont participant is a 47 year old female with a 31 BMI. This location continues to serve 2,500 unique users and has logged over 8,000 pounds lost.
“We know when employees are at a healthy weight they feel better, are more productive and are less likely to miss work,” said Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, Kaiser Permanente Colorado vice president of government, external relations and research. “By bringing this kiosk to various City of Longmont department buildings, we hope to encourage more city employees to join the community in leading healthier and happier lifestyles.”
St. Vrain Valley School District is also a local mobile kiosk partner.
Weigh and Win is supported by Kaiser Permanente and additional community partners, in an effort to encourage healthy eating and active living throughout Colorado. The civic platform has reached over 75,000 enrollments and distributed $460,000 in cash rewards. The average weight loss experienced by a successful participant after one year in the program is 8 percent. Of the same population, the average sustained weight loss over a 36 month period is 20.4 pounds.
There are currently 90 community kiosk locations hosted statewide. A map of all partners and locations can be found at www.weighandwin.com.
