Ash Tree Removal and Replacement
Ash Tree Removal
The City of Longmont is taking a conservative approach to ash tree treatments and has and will continue to preemptively remove ash trees that meet one or more of the following conditions:
- Located under utility lines
- Poor health and/or condition
- Small diameter
Trees under utility lines require additional maintenance and tend to have a compromised form. Smaller diameter trees will be removed and replaced. EAB treatments with Tree-Age causes minor wounding at the injection sites that could compromise the health of the tree.
Tree Planting
The City of Longmont plants trees on an annual basis and strives to replace much of the canopy lost from removed ash trees. A resilient urban forest that can withstand future invasive insects and climate change requires a diverse mix of species. Currently, ash trees comprise approximately 10% of the City of Longmont’s public urban forest, which is a reduction from the pre-EAB population. Ash trees that were planted in poor locations, were in poor health, or were small in size were removed.
Wood Utilization
Forestry Services has strong connections with the local woodworking community and partners with companies to re purpose logs to keep this valuable resource out of the landfill.
