Surplus Wood Program

Current Status: OPEN
Hours of Operation: Sunrise to sunset, seven days a week

The City of Longmont Parks & Natural Resources Department manages forest stewardship operations in the City’s watershed. Each year, the department generates logs during wildfire risk reduction and habitat improvement projects intended to protect Longmont’s drinking water supply and improve forest health. Visit the Button Rock Forest Stewardship webpage for more information.
The goal of the Surplus Wood Program is to provide valuable wood resources back to local community members. Utilizing forest wood products helps reduce costs to the City for processing and hauling of wood waste, and provides added public benefit in the form of firewood or millable logs.
- The Button Rock Preserve Wood Lot is open to all area residents (whereas the Forestry Sort Yard in Longmont is open only to Longmont residents)
- Wood is only available for personal use and resale is strictly prohibited
- Wood is available as 8 to 10 foot logs
- All waivers expire on December 31 every year
- The wood is available on a first-come, first served basis with no obligation from the City to supply wood
To remove wood, a waiver must be submitted. This program has reached its capacity for 2025 and will not accept additional waivers until January, 2026.

The City of Longmont Forestry Services accumulates large quantities of wood logs from the management of trees in the urban forest. The goal of the permit is to provide valuable wood resources back to Longmont residents. Utilizing urban wood helps reduce costs to the City for processing and hauling of wood waste, and utilizes the wood to a higher value.
