Municipal Court FAQ
No, court staff is prohibited by law from providing legal advice.
If you have any general, administrative, payment-related, or scheduling questions regarding your court case, please contact the Longmont Municipal Court Clerk’s Office. The court staff will assist you in any way they can.
Please be prepared to pay all fines and costs on your court date. Generally, all fines and costs are due the day they are assessed.
The Longmont Municipal Court accepts cash, checks, and money orders for payment. The Court will also be able to set up a payment schedule with you if you need time to pay your costs and fines.
The Longmont Municipal Court also encourages the use of alternatives in the payment of fines and costs. For example, you may use useful public service hours towards the payment of your fine and costs. The useful public service must be completed for a nonprofit, charitable organization or governmental entity. The Court Clerks will be happy to assist you. All useful public service hours are verified prior to acceptance.
Your arraignment date is listed on your ticket (summons and complaint). This is a required appearance.
Failure to appearance may result in a default judgment against you (traffic infractions only) and/or a warrant for your arrest. For certain violations, a loss of your driving privilege may also result.
Continuances of your arraignment or other court date may be granted on a case by case basis if you file a “Motion to Continue” with the Court in advance. Blank motions are available at the Longmont Municipal Court, on this website, and at www.coloradomunicipalcourts.org. Be certain to also file a copy of any motion or pleading upon the City Attorney’s Office as required.
For traffic infractions only, you may be able to plea guilty and pay your fines and costs in advance of your court appearance (called a ‘fine in lieu of proceedings’) . Please look at the instructions on the back side of the summons and complaint. To see if you qualify to pay your ticket without a court appearance, contact the court at 303-651-8687.
Yes, the City Prosecutor of the Longmont City Attorney’s Office is generally available to discuss your Longmont Municipal court case with you before entering a plea. This is called “plea negotiations” or “plea bargaining”.  The City Prosecutor is generally available during arraignment sessions or by appointment.
The City Prosecutor may offer or not offer a plea bargain on a particular case.  This decision may be based on provided reports, prior criminal history, or other evidence in the case.  If the City Prosecutor does not offer a plea bargain, you may set the case for trial or enter a ‘guilty’ or ‘no contest’ plea. There is no ‘right’ to a plea bargain. You do not need to accept any plea bargain.
All defendants are presumed innocent and have the right to have the charges against them proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
If your Summons and Complaint (“ticket”) has a blue border at the top, this is a State of Colorado court case for the 20th Judicial District (Boulder County). For the 20th Judicial District cases, so you will need to contact the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s office at (303) 441-3700.  City of Longmont Summons and Complaints (“tickets”) are all white in color and you may speak with the City Prosecutor.

For certain traffic infractions only, you may be eligible to pay your fine and costs without a court appearance. Parent or legal guardian should be present at the time of payment.
Your ‘ticket’ is called a is a summons and complaint. This is a legal document. Please read the front and back of the summons and complaint carefully as it does contain instructions and will have the date, time, and address of your court appearance.

The Longmont Juvenile Community Service Work Program is for juveniles between the ages of 10 years and 17 years for the completion of useful public services hours. This is open to juveniles who need to complete useful public services hours as a condition of a sentence, alternative program, city-based program, or as an alternative to the payment of costs and fines. This program is administered through the Longmont Municipal Probation.

Longmont Municipal Probation is a service arm to the Longmont Municipal Court, serving the Court, offender and community. Municipal Probation provides direct services to adult and juvenile petty offense, misdemeanor and city ordinance offenders who receive a summons in the City of Longmont, appear in the Longmont Municipal Court, and are referred to Municipal Probation by the Court.

The Longmont City Attorney’s Criminal Justice Division (“City Prosecutor”) prosecutes violations of the Longmont City Code and Charter in the Longmont Municipal Court.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. The Criminal Justice Division is closed for the lunch hour, then open from 1 to 5 p.m.
The Longmont Municipal Court has judges available to perform weddings. Weddings are by appointment only. Witnesses and family members are welcome but not necessary. To make an appointment, please contact the Longmont Municipal Court at (303) 651-8687.
If you are the defendant in a case before the Longmont Municipal Court, most court dates are a required appearance. Appearance is also required if you are on bond.

If you are a witness for the prosecution (the City of Longmont – Longmont City Attorney’s Office – City Prosecutor) and have received a subpoena, call (303) 651-8902 and explain, or leave a concise message, explaining why you cannot attend. Mention the defendant’s name and trial date. The City Prosecutor will need your phone number, so they can call you back after the prosecutor reviews the case. Unless you have been expressly excused, the subpoena requires that you appear as ordered.
The first court appearance is called an arraignment. Arraignment simply means to come to court, learn about the charge(s) against you, learn about your rights, and then answer the charge(s). An arraignment is not a trial.
This is an opportunity for you to make a plea (not guilty, guilty, no contest, etc.) before the Court. The City Attorney (also known as the city prosecutor) will generally be available during your arraignment. You may speak to the City Prosecutor at your arraignment date, if you wish. If such a plea agreement is offered, you are not required to accept it.
You are presumed innocent of the charge(s). The City Attorney is required to prove the charge(s) beyond a reasonable doubt before you would be considered guilty.
There are two separate probation offices in Longmont: Longmont Municipal Probation and Boulder County Probation. These offices serve two different jurisdictions.
The Longmont Municipal Probation serves probationers charged with violations of the Longmont Code and Charter only (sometimes referred to as municipal ‘ordinance violations’ or ‘misdemeanors’) and into the Longmont Municipal Court.
The Boulder County Probation serves probationers charged with state law offenses and assigned to the Boulder County Probation (includes felony offenses, domestic violence cases and some misdemeanor offenses such as driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired, etc.).

All person and property entering the Longmont Municipal Court and Probation are subject to search.
You will be required to go through security to enter the court areas, including both the Municipal Court and Probation. All items brought into the court are will be searched. Please do not bring any items you are not willing to have searched and/or confiscated.
No cell phones, iPods, cameras, electronic devices, food, drinks, alcohol, marijuana, knives, firearms, weapons, razor blades, mace, pepper spray, illegal drugs, clubs, bats, handcuff keys, tools, explosives, bags or purses larger than 10 inches, backpacks, duffle bags, boxes, skateboards, sleeping bags, suitcases, large purposes, household items, pets, or any other item that may interfere with the safety and security of the courthouse facility.
The Colorado Supreme Court, the 19th and 20th Judicial Districts, and the Longmont Municipal Court have issued administrative orders regarding the safety and security of the courthouse facilities and those in attendance.
