A “Panel” Discussion (More Power to You blog)

It’s almost spring. So it’s almost home improvement season. Which makes it a great time to talk about solar panels – or at least, how the heck to get started with them.

About 300,000 Colorado homes now have rooftop solar panels and the number keeps growing. This year, Longmont even updated its codes to allow more solar for homes and businesses. But if you’re new to solar, it helps to know where to start … beyond singing a few choruses of “Here Comes the Sun,” that is.

So if your plans might include panels, here’s a few things to consider:

  1. How much electricity am I using? Check your utility bills to see what your typical monthly power usage has been, and think about anything new you might be adding that’ll increase that usage, like a heat pump or an electric vehicle. That’ll help you and your installer make sure you’re getting a solar setup that’s the right size for your needs.
  2. How much electricity can I save? Spring is also a great time to get an Efficiency Works energy assessment and see where you have opportunities to save energy – which may also help reduce the amount of solar you need to install. (There are some great rebates for efficiency improvements, too!)
  3. Who do I work with? Finding a reputable installer can be one of the most important steps you take. The Colorado Solar and Storage Association provides a directory of member installers that customers can consult, while Solar United Neighbors can provide some additional information, including how to save money through a group-buy with other county residents. Always get at least three quotes – this can be a big investment, so take the time to evaluate your choices.
  4. What should I ask a potential installer? Customers receive solar credits when they generate more power than they use, so find out what savings you can expect to see from a new solar energy system. You’ll also make sure to ask about what your financing options are and how long it might take to make back your investment.

So spring ahead and learn. You just might take a shine to it.
