A Second Sunrise (More Power to You blog)
With apologies to The Beatles, here comes the sun … again.
That’s right, Iluminar Community Solar is back in the news. This time, the City’s own community solar program is helping power up an entire affordable housing complex. Residents at the new 75-unit Ascent at Hover Crossing benefit from City-owned rooftop solar panels which helps lower their electric bill.
If you’re not familiar with Iluminar … well, it is pretty new. The program got its start last October , serving 30 Longmont electric customers with the help of solar panels on the City’s Waste Services building. It has two simple aims:
- Help people be part of solar energy who normally wouldn’t be able to add panels to their roof.
- Give some extra utility bill help to customers who need it.
In the case of Ascent, all 75 apartments are also all-electric. That means the solar panels are helping support services like electric heating and cooling, electric water heaters and even electric ovens. So in addition to a lower bill, the residents also get better indoor air quality, helping make Longmont a more sustainable community.
Curious? Find out more at the Iluminar web page or the Ascent at Hover Crossing page. And if you’ve been considering solar panels or a more electric home yourself, you can check out our Solar Energy and Going All-Electric pages for more information.
You may just find some options that really rock.
