Bitterly Cold Overnight 12/21-12/22

The temperature may be in the 50s right now, but we are going to bitterly cold conditions overnight.

Here are a few tips to keep your household pipes from freezing:

– Open cabinet doors leading to exposed pipes (such as access doors for sinks) which allows warmer air to circulate.

– Let your faucets drip cold water – it is harder for a pipe to freeze even if there is a trickle of water flowing. To not waste water, you can collect the drops and reuse them.

– Keep the thermostat set above 65 degrees.

– Keep attached garage doors shut.

– Disconnect outside hoses from the faucets.

– If you are able, wrap/insulate pipes in unheated areas.

– If you suspect a pipe in your home is frozen, do not use an open flame on the pipe to thaw it. Use a heating pad or a hair dryer on a lower heat setting to thaw the line slowly.

– Learn the location of the home’s water shut-off valve. In most single-family homes, the valve is in the basement or crawl space, on a wall facing the street. In the case of a damaged pipe, you may need to shut off the water to the property if a pipe breaks.
