City’s water supply not impacted by fuel spill near Lyons

A tanker truck carrying unleaded gasoline tipped over on Highway 36 at the Apple Valley Bridge this afternoon and began spilling fuel into the St. Vrain Creek upstream of Lyons. All of the water supply for Longmont and Lyons is being diverted at the Longmont Dam, above the spill, so no impacts are occurring to the treated water supply. In addition, staff has closed the head gate to the Oligarchy Ditch, so the impacted water will not flow through Longmont via the Oligarchy Ditch or reach Union Reservoir.

A hazardous materials team from the Colorado State Patrol is on the scene containing and cleaning up the spill. The Division of Wildlife will be assessing impacts to aquatic life in the affected area. In addition, staff has been communicating with Town of Lyons officials, Boulder County Public Health and the Boulder County Office of Emergency Management throughout the incident.
