Construction Starting August 28 at the 3rd Avenue/Atwood Street Railroad Crossing

After a delayed start, the City Longmont will begin construction at the 3rd Avenue/Atwood Street railroad crossing on Thursday, August 28. Construction is expected to be completed in November. This is part of the first set of crossings to receive safety improvements for the Railroad Quiet Zones Safety Improvements project.

 

For approximately the first 10 weeks of construction:

    • There will be single-lane closures on 3rd Avenue near the Atwood Street intersection. At least one lane of traffic will be open in both directions.
    • The northbound lane of Atwood Street just north of 3rd Avenue will be closed for approximately two months. .
    • The southbound lane of Atwood Street just north of 3rd Avenue will be open for approximately five weeks with access to westbound 3rd Avenue only.
    • The southbound lane of Atwood Street will then close along with the northbound lane resulting in a full closure of Atwood Street just north of the intersection.
    • Residents on Atwood Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue will use designated detour routes.
    • Non-local travelers should follow detour routes to Collyer Street and Martin Street.

 

In early November, there will be a full closure of the intersection at 3rd Avenue and Atwood Street for approximately two weeks.

 

    • No through traffic will be allowed at the intersection.
    • Traffic will need to detour to CO119/Ken Pratt Boulevard or 9th Avenue for east/west travel and Martin Street or Main Street for north/south travel.
    • Local traffic will be able to access driveways along 3rd Avenue and Atwood Street from the side of the intersection where they are located.
    • The sidewalks will be closed at the intersection during this time. Pedestrians should follow signs for detour routes.

 

Regular construction hours are Monday – Friday from 7 am – 5 pm. Some work may occur until 7 pm and also on Saturdays and Sundays, as necessary. Advisory

Beginning Sept. 2, the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark St) will be closed to the public every Wed, 8 – 11 am.
