Fatal Accident 17th and Alpine

On Thursday, April 8, 2021 at about 5:57pm, Longmont Police and Fire responded to E. 17th Ave and Alpine St reference a two vehicle collision.  Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on E. 17th Ave at Alpine St and a Subaru Forester was traveling northbound on Alpine St at E.17th Ave.

Both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time resulting in a front to side (T) collision.  The Ford Explorer rolled over and a 28-year-old female from Longmont was ejected from the vehicle, resulting in on-scene fatal injuries.  A 3-year-old male was also ejected from the Ford Explorer and was taken to a Denver area hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.  Neither is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt or properly secured in a child safety seat.

The driver of the Subaru, a 19-year-old female from Longmont, suffered minor injuries and was released on scene.  The intersection at E 17th Ave and Alpine St is controlled by a signal light and right-of-way is being investigated as a causal factor in the collision.  Preliminary investigation suggests the Ford Explorer failed to yield the right-of-way and entered the intersection on a red light.

In relation to the deceased driver, it is not known at this time if drugs/alcohol or speed were factors in this crash.  The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time.

The Longmont Department of Public Safety would like to remind all drivers and occupants that seat belts and child restraint devices save lives.  Attached is link to Longmont’s Child Car Seat Checkpoint for information.  There is no charge by the fire department for Longmont residents to participate in the virtual car seat safety checkpoint

Updates on this investigation will be available in approximately two to three weeks.   If you were a witness to this accident, and have not spoken with police, please contact CSO Noyes at (303) 774-4458.
