Gravel Mining Operations to Begin in Longmont

March 10, 2023 – The Irwin Thomas Gravel Mine will begin pre-mining operations the week of March 13. The mine is located on a 295-acre parcel of land both north and south of Ken Pratt Boulevard, east of the Costco development, west of North 119th Street and north of Quail Road. Holcim-US (formally Aggregate Industries) will be completing the work.

This gravel mine was permitted by Boulder County in 2003 and annexed into the City of Longmont in 2018. The gravel mine operation is permitted by the City as a PUD (Planned Unit Development).

After pre-mining operations are complete, the mining and removal of gravel will begin and continue for up to 6 years. Mining will begin south of Ken Pratt Boulevard and move north of Ken Pratt Boulevard as work progresses. Seeded earthen berm will be constructed on the west and south sides of the property to provide a visual and sound barrier for adjacent properties.

Throughout the duration of the project, the City staff will monitor the mining operation to ensure compliance with the PUD requirements.
