Longmont Hires New Airport Manager
The City of Longmont has hired David Slayter as the new manager of the Vance Brand Municipal Airport.
Slayter has been the Executive Director of Houma-Terrebonne Airport Commission in Houma, LA since 2009. He is expected to start the Longmont job on Monday, March 16, 2015.“My family and I are looking forward to our move to Longmont,” Slayter said. “I am excited about the opportunity to help develop and improve the airport. Airports are an important gateway and economic engine to communities. I appreciate the opportunity to ensure that Vance Brand runs smoothly, is a good neighbor, and welcomes people and businesses to the community. I look forward to serving the community that will be our new home,” he said.
Slayter has more than 20 years in the aviation industry, 9 years of which has been in airport management. Additionally, he has worked for Louisiana’s State Aviation Division as an Aviation Program Manager, including constant interaction with the Federal Aviation Administration. He was instrumental in re-writing state administrative code and revised statutes pertaining to aviation. He also is experienced in aircraft noise abatement procedures.
“Vance Brand is an important economic asset to the community, and the City is committed to continuous improvement of the investments we have at the airport,” Shawn Lewis, Longmont assistant city manager, said. “We’re confident that David’s energy and experience will help improve the airport facilities, community relations and overall operations at Vance Brand.”
Slayter holds the Certified Member (C.M.) designation from the American Association of Airport Executives and a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aviation with a minor in Aviation Management from Louisiana Tech University. He also holds an Instrument Rated, Commercial Pilot Certificate.
Slayter replaces Tim Barth who was the Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport manager for nearly 19 years. Barth was recently appointed the director of aviation for Cheyenne Regional Airport in Cheyenne, WY.
Slayter was the unanimous selection of the interview panel, which was well represented by airport tenants and Airport Advisory Board (AAB) members. Members of the panel included AAB Chair Don Dolce, AAB Vice Chair Dale VanZant, AAB City Council Liaison Gabe Santos, Elite Aviation Owner Julie Meyers, Airport Hangar Association President Anita Bragg, Airport Hangar Association Member Marc Arnold (chosen by the Hangar Association Officers), Assistant Finance Director Molly Kostelecky, City Manager Harold Dominguez and the position supervisor Assistant City Manager Shawn Lewis.
The Vance Brand Municipal Airport is owned and operated by the City of Longmont, Colorado. Longmont is a home rule city that is run by a Council-Manager form of government. A seven member airport advisory board is appointed by City Council to provide them with recommendations on long-term planning, land-use, and necessary improvements to the airport. Located at 229 Airport Road, just west of the city, the airport is accessible from Colorado Highway 119 and Airport Road. Airport services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The airport has a 4,800 foot concrete runway and parallel taxiway.
