Say it with us, Longmont: sesquisemiquincentennial

Here’s a fun vocabulary word you might be hearing a lot in Colorado this year: sesquicentennial, meaning “relating to the 150th anniversary of a significant event.” And there’s plenty to celebrate. Colorado marks its 150th birthday in 2026, and the United States celebrates its 250th. Given all these anniversaries, you might even hear the term sesquisemiquincentennial, used to describe a combined celebration of both milestones around town. Actually, you might never hear that term because it is nearly impossible to say.

Funny words aside, the Longmont Public Library has its own unique reason to celebrate. As Colorado’s first public library, it has been a center for knowledge, imagination, and connection for more than a century. From storytimes for kids to programs for teens and adults, free community films and talks, and open access to books, technology, and ideas, the Library has been a cornerstone of Longmont for generations.

As we mark Colorado’s sesquicentennial and the nation’s semiquincentennial, the Longmont Public Library reminds us why libraries matter. They preserve history, foster lifelong learning, and bring people together.

Whether you are exploring the story of Colorado, discovering new ideas, or simply enjoying a quiet place to read, the Library welcomes everyone as essential place in the City where you can learn, grow, and be.

Here’s to another 150 years of curiosity, community, and connection. Here’s to another sesquisemiquincentennial moment in the making. Enjoy!
