Longmont Police Officer Involved Shooting
At 11:31 am today, August 10, 2020, Longmont Police received the first of three calls regarding a man attempting to access vehicles and entering garages in the areas of:
• 800 block of Gay Street
• 900 block of Bross Street
• 10th Avenue and Warren Court
While in the area investigating the calls, three Longmont officers were alerted by a resident in the 800 block of Bross Street that a man was entering a garage at the rear of her property. The historic properties in this area are known for being very deep and narrow. While the three officers walked a single driveway to the back of the garage, the officers discovered the suspect was in the process of stealing a vehicle. The suspect put the stolen black Chevrolet Suburban into reverse and backed down the driveway placing the officers in immediate danger and forcing them to flee for cover. The suspect damaged a six foot fence while maneuvering the vehicle to Bross Street. During the altercation one officer discharged his weapon firing one round. Neither the suspect nor the three officers were injured.
Officers pursued the stolen vehicle to the 1200 block of Spruce Avenue where the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect is a white male, 30-years-old, and a parole escapee. The suspect’s name is not being released pending booking at the Boulder County Jail. Longmont Police Report #20-6204.
Per our policy, the Longmont officer who fired his service weapon was placed on administrative leave pending the external investigation.
