Longmont Power & Communications Honored with APPA’s Highest Safety Designation
LONGMONT, CO – Longmont Power & Communications has been recognized by the American Public Power Association with the Diamond Safety Award of Excellence, the APPA’s highest honor for safety. This is the sixth time LPC has received the award.
The APPA safety awards are based on the percentage of incidents relative to total work hours. By keeping its incident rates low—even during challenging conditions like windstorms—LPC has shown an unwavering commitment to a “safety-first” culture.
“This validates our commitment to protecting our crews, making sure they have the training, the resources, and the support they need to perform their jobs safely and go home to their families every night,” said Trenton King, LPC’s safety and training manager.
In protecting both its crews and the public, LPC is committed to the philosophy that “slow is smooth and smooth is fast.” By taking the necessary time to understand job hazards, LPC crews avoid the mistakes that could be caused by rushing and ensure that Longmont’s homes and businesses continue to enjoy reliable electrical service.
Key Safety Pillars at LPC include:
* Rigorous Preparation: Every job begins with pre-job briefings and “tailboards” to discuss specific hazards and safety tables.
* Qualified Personnel: A strict policy ensures no one is placed on a job they are not fully qualified to perform.
* Constant Vigilance: Staff maintains a routine that guards against complacency, ensuring no safety procedures are missed while working on high-voltage energized lines.
* Empowering staff with the authority to pause any task immediately if they encounter unsafe conditions or feel unprepared to proceed securely
* Public Awareness: Beyond the crew, LPC prioritizes public safety and customer service, ensuring the community is protected while vital infrastructure work is performed.
This award reinforces Longmont Power & Communications’ position as a leader in the utility industry, proving that dedication to safety culture and meticulous “next step” authorization can lead to world-class results.
