Longmont’s Historic Callahan House Returned to Heyday Glory After Restoration

LONGMONT, Colo. – Restoration and preservation work at Longmont’s Historic Callahan House and Gardens has been completed and residents are encouraged to view the finished results.

In December of 2021, Callahan House was awarded $180,000 by History Colorado’s State Historical Fund. The historic home also received a 25% cash match, in the amount of $60,000, from the City of Longmont. The grant was awarded to Callahan House, a member of the National Register for Historic Places, as part of an in-depth and competitive process. The award was based on several areas of merit, acknowledging ongoing services provided to residents of Longmont – and the front range – since 1938.

A total of $240,000 was dedicated to historic preservation projects that focused on the exterior of the house. The scope of the work included:

  • Preservation of the ornate leaded glass windows, including the iconic curved library window, and installation of protective storm windows on all leaded glass.
  • Preservation of the historic concrete driveway, including matching original aesthetics and drainage schematics designed by T.M. Callahan.
  • Exterior woodwork restoration and repainting, which included lead paint remediation as well as a historic analysis of paint layers to restore colors from the early 1900’s.

“Being awarded the State Historical Fund Grant was incredibly important to Callahan House’s efforts towards historic preservation,” stated Brittaney Hastings, Callahan House manager. “Callahan House provides a historic resource for immersive education, as well as a civic home serving the varying needs of a diverse community. Visitors to the house can learn about life at the turn of the 20th century and of the valuable contributions made by Thomas and Alice Callahan to Longmont’s rich history. We are grateful to History Colorado and would like to acknowledge the efforts of City staff and the Callahan House Advisory Board in achieving this award.”

Community members are welcome to view exterior restorations to Callahan House any time by visiting the public gardens, open from dawn to dusk daily. See inside Callahan House during the annual Holiday Open House on December 7 from 4 to 7 pm. In addition, special access to view the Callahan House interior is being offered on December 13 and December 20 from 4 to 6 pm. No registration is required for these events.
