Quiet Zones Construction Starting in July at 3rd Ave/Atwood St and Longs Peak Ave/Atwood St Railroad Crossings

The City of Longmont plans to start construction next month on two more railroad crossings that are part of the first group of crossings to receive safety improvements for the Railroad Quiet Zones Safety Improvements project.

Long Peak Avenue/Atwood Street Railroad Crossing:

Construction is planned to start July 7 and is expected to be completed in mid-August. There will be a full closure of the intersection at Longs Peak Avenue and Atwood Street starting July 7 for the duration of the project, which is approximately four weeks.

    • No through traffic will be allowed at the intersection.
    • Traffic will need to detour to 6th Avenue for east/west travel and Collyer Street or Baker Street for north/south travel.
    • Local traffic will be able to access residential driveways along Longs Peak Avenue and Atwood Street.
    • Residents on Atwood Street will need to enter and exit properties from 8th Avenue, using the one-way street for both north/south travel during the closure. Flaggers will be posted to safely direct traffic.
    • Parking will be prohibited on Atwood Street between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue.
    • Parking for Collyer Park is recommended on Collyer Street and 6th Avenue while the intersection is closed.
    • The sidewalks at the intersection will be closed during this time.
    • Access to Columbine Elementary School will remain open from westbound Longs Peak Avenue.

3rd Avenue/Atwood Street Railroad Crossing:

Construction is planned to start July 14 and is expected to be completed in September. For approximately the first two months of construction:

    • There will be single-lane closures on 3rd Avenue near the Atwood Street intersection. At least one lane of traffic will be open in both directions.
    • The northbound lane of Atwood Street just north of 3rd Avenue will be closed for approximately two months.
    • The southbound lane of Atwood Street just north of 3rd Avenue will be open for approximately five weeks with access to westbound 3rd Avenue only.
    • The southbound lane of Atwood Street will then close along with the northbound lane resulting in a full closure of Atwood Street just north of the intersection.
    • Residents on Atwood Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue will need to enter and exit properties from 4th Avenue with the assistance of a traffic control flagger.

In late August, there will be a full closure of the intersection at 3rd Avenue and Atwood Street for approximately two weeks.

    • No through traffic will be allowed at the intersection.
    • Traffic will need to detour to CO119/Ken Pratt Boulevard or 9th Avenue for east/west travel and Lashley Street or Main Street for north/south travel.
    • Local traffic will be able to access driveways along 3rd Avenue and Atwood Street from the side of the intersection where they are located.
    • The sidewalks will be closed at the intersection during this time.

A Quiet Zone is a section of railroad where trains do not routinely sound their horns at road crossings. However, multiple adjacent crossings will need to have safety improvements before a full quiet zone can be designated. Therefore, you may continue to hear train horns after construction is completed at these crossings until other adjacent crossings are also completed. For more information, visit the Quiet Zones in Longmont webpage.

Regular construction hours are Monday – Friday from 7 am – 5 pm. Some work may occur until 7 pm and also on Saturdays and Sundays, as necessary. Detour signs will direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic to alternate routes, as needed. Check the project group 1 webpage for the latest information.

Questions or concerns regarding the project should be directed to the project hotline by calling 720-526-2044 or emailing QuietZones@longmontcolorado.gov.
