Sunny Moments (More Power to You blog)
As 2025 wraps up, we can say that Longmont definitely had its time in the sun this year. Or at least its time in the solar panels.
OK, solar energy wasn’t in every headline this year. But time and again, some of the brightest moments for Longmont electricity in 2025 had a glimpse of sunshine associated with them. Such as:
- The debut of Iluminar, Longmont’s first-ever community solar program. This was a double win for residents, bringing solar energy to customers who normally couldn’t have rooftop panels, as well as giving some utility bill help to households in need. (Find out more at the Iluminar website.)
- Solar energy continued to grow in Longmont, with new rules making it easier to add for homes and businesses. By December, about 1,150 Longmont electric customers had solar on their roofs, with more still to come. (If you’re thinking about it yourself, here are a few solar tips to consider as you get started.)
- Black Hollow Sun made headlines for our partners at Platte River Power Authority as it powered up Phase 1 and began supplying solar energy to customers. Once all phases are complete, Black Hollow will be the largest solar site in Northern Colorado, able to power more than 73,000 homes and businesses in Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins and Estes Park each year.
- Platte River also had a literal day in the sun on Oct. 16, when solar, wind and water energy provided 100% of the power it supplied to Longmont and the other member cities for a stretch of about eight hours. (If you’re curious, you can get a near-real -time view of Platte River’s energy production here.)
- 2025 also broke new ground for electrification, and especially for electric heat pumps, the appliances that let you heat and cool your home without relying on fossil fuels. LPC customers claimed 30% more heat pump rebates than in 2024 … and the year isn’t quite over yet!
- Fans of energy efficiency got a new Efficiency Works website in 2025, making it simpler than ever to learn about efficiency rebates to save you money and energy, electric heat pumps to heat and cool your home, electric vehicles and much more.
- LPC customers even got to virtually visit the locker room of our hard-working electric line crew this year. If you haven’t peeked in yet, check out our video “The Crew,” where you can put some faces to the people who keep your power safe and reliable.
As 2025 sunsets, we wish you all a Happy New Year.
May you and all our community have many more opportunities to shine.
