Longmont CAReS Accepting Applications
Longmont residents who need help paying their bills can apply for rebates from the City of Longmont. Longmont CAReS (Longmont City Assistance and Rebate System) merges several City rebate programs so that eligible residents can apply for multiple rebates by submitting one form. Rebates are offered for a portion of property tax, electricity costs, water service costs, grocery sales tax, and the Park & Greenway Maintenance Fee. Residents who receive LEAP, SNAP, SLMB, 104PTC, USDA’s free lunch, or other income-qualified assistance are eligible for this program. Free Longmont Lights Holiday Celebration
Enjoy the City’s annual free Longmont Lights holiday celebration this weekend in Downtown Longmont. From 5 to 8 pm (event times vary) on Friday, December 13, in Roosevelt Park at 700 Longs Peak Avenue, delight in the festive activities including Santa’s Workshop for kids at the Memorial Building, visits with Santa at his new location at the Senior Center, balloon glow, hot cocoa carts and mini train rides, and the fireworks finale at 7:45 pm, weather permitting, sponsored by Bank of Colorado. Holiday Parade of Lights and Special Events
Longmont Lights continues at 5 pm on Saturday, December 14, with the “Joy to the World” holiday parade on Main Street. And before the parade, don’t miss the Downtown Winter Wonderland from 3:30 to 5 pm at St. Stephen’s Plaza, 500 Main Street, for activities, music, family fun and more. New in 2019, register for the 4 pm Main Street Fun Run: run, jog, skip, or dance down Main Street for this 1-mile fun run/walk put on by Shoes & Brews and the Longmont Downtown Development Authority. Downtown gift cards are accepted at more than 70 local businesses and make great last-minute gifts for anyone. You can purchase Downtown Longmont gift cards for any amount between $20 and $500, and they can be used like debit cards. Santa Story Time and Brunch at the Museum
Celebrate the winter holidays at a story time and brunch with Santa at 9 am or 11 am on Friday, December 20, at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road. You’ll enjoy yummy food and cheer as Santa entertains your whole family with stories. Bring your wish lists and camera for this special event for children accompanied by an adult. Youth Junior Nuggets Basketball League
Basketball players in grades 3 through 8 can hone their skills in Recreation Services’ Junior Nuggets league that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, participation and fun! Saturday games are played in January and February in Longmont and neighboring communities. Each participant receives a reversible Nuggets jersey, a basketball and two tickets to a Denver Nuggets game. Scholarships are available. This week, the Library’s regularly scheduled Family Storytime from 11 to 11:30 am on Friday, December 20, will present a special guest story reader. Join Shayna Borenstein for Hanukkah stories, songs, and a craft. This program is suitable for children of all ages, and no registration is required. Children younger than 9 must be accompanied by a caregiver. The Library is located at 409 4th Avenue, and all storytimes are free.
Turn Bargains Into Treasures at Thrift U!
Master the art of thrift store upcycling with your ThriftU degree from the Longmont Public Library. In this first class of the spring semester from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday, January 15, beginning and better crafters will transform the humble clipboard into an organizational marvel. This class is at the Library, 409 4th Avenue, and is limited to 25 people. Supplies will be provided, and anyone of any skill level age 16 and older is invited to participate. Take your old holiday lights to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street through January 5. There is a specially designated bin to recycle your light strands.
