Would You Like to Serve Your Community?
If you would like to participate in the deliberation of topics of importance to the city, consider applying to serve on a volunteer advisory board. Persons shall be eligible to serve who have lived in and been registered voters of the City of Longmont for one year prior to their appointment. 303-651-8649. The application deadline is 5 pm on Friday, January 30.
Small Wonders Preschool Open House
Small Wonders Preschool, in the St. Vrain Memorial Building at 700 Longs Peak Avenue, will host an open house for prospective students and parents from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Tuesday, February 10. State-licensed Small Wonders is for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and offers a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that help each child develop socially, emotionally, physically, creatively and cognitively. Library Festival Anthology Taking Entries
The Friends of the Longmont Library invites you to submit entries for the 2015 festival anthology in the categories of fiction, personal narrative, poetry, essay, children’s stories, photographs, drawings, illustrations and more! Entries should be appropriate for a general audience. Please note that submission of a work doesn’t guarantee inclusion in the anthology. Find an entry form and guidelines at http://www.LongmontColorado.gov/library. The submission deadline is Sunday, March 1.
Update Your Rec Pass Photo for a Free Visit
Every annual or quarterly recreation pass holder who has their picture updated at any City of Longmont recreation facility will receive one bonus daily visit. The free visit can be used by the member or as a guest pass; limit one per person. Offer expires January 31 and all bonus visits must be used before the end of 2015. Silver Sneakers and 20-visit pass holders are not eligible for this promotion. For details, visit the Longmont Recreation Center, Centennial Pool, or the St. Vrain Memorial Building.
Youth Anti-vandalism Video Contest
The Longmont Youth Council is challenging youth in grades 6 through12 who live in the City of Longmont to create a video (no longer than one minute) that will help prevent vandalism and raise awareness of this issue in our community. The first place winner will receive a prize of $200 and second place will win a prize of $100. Entries are due by 5 pm on Friday, February 20. Longmont Police Explorers Place in Tactical Competition
The Longmont Police Explorers (high school students) took second and third places in four events in the Tactical Explorer Competition in Chandler, AZ. Fifty-seven teams competed this year and Longmont was right up there on the competition board with heavy hitters like Las Vegas Metro PD, Orange County, Ventura County and Los Angeles. Longmont’s 7 person team was comprised of 5 women and 2 men. The Chandler competition is considered one of the most challenging Explorer competitions in the nation.
First Coffee with Council for 2015
Longmont City Council will host Coffee with Council from 9 to 10 am on Saturday, January 31, at La Vita Bella, 475 Main Street. At this event, you can talk informally with at least two council members on any topic of your choice. Mayor Dennis Coombs and Council Member Gabe Santos are scheduled to attend. Free Child Car Seat Check Offered at Fire Station
As many as half of child car seats are installed incorrectly. Longmont Fire offers a free child car seat check point the second Wednesday of every month at Longmont Fire Station 2, located at Mountain View Avenue and Hover Street, from 2 pm until 7 pm.
