Based on the extensive community engagement and heat mapping, this project will install parks-cooling amenities at Kensington, Lanyon and Spangler Neighborhood Parks. This project is bringing exciting upgrades to three neighborhood parks – Kensington, Lanyon, and Spangler – to make them cooler, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for residents of all ages.
Enhancements include new shade structures, cooling elements, updated gathering areas, and a future splash pad at Kensington Park.
A new splash pad at Kensington Park is part of the project’s second phase and is supported in part by a GOCO grant.
Project Highlights: Cooling & Comfort Upgrades
As part of phase 1 construction already open for use across the three parks, visitors can enjoy:
- New shaded seating at Kensington and Spangler Parks
- Improved amphitheater style or community gathering spaces at Kensington and Lanyon Parks
- Cooling misting feature at Lanyon Park
- Shade enhancements near play areas at Spangler Park
- Updated swing set at Kensington Park
These upgrades aim to provide relief on hot days, create more inviting neighborhood spaces, and give families and community members fun and functional reasons to visit their local parks.

Kensington Park Splash Pad (Phase 2)
Design is underway for a new interactive splash pad at Kensington Park, which will offer a refreshing, family friendly space during the warm months. Construction of the splash pad is anticipated to begin in late summer or fall of 2026, following completion of design and permitting.
