2024

NextLight shares national stage in "Best Tech Brands" honor
PC Magazine recognized Longmont's high-speed fiber-optic NextLight internet service as part of its annual "Best Tech Brands" ranking. Internet providers normally are not part of the list, but NextLight's extraordinary levels of customer support (as seen in the 2023 Readers' Choice awards) prompted the publication to give the city-owned internet service provider an honorable mention, saying "The people of Longmont went above and beyond when scoring their local ISP to make sure we knew exactly how they felt about it."

2023

NextLight Takes PC Magazine Top Honors
NextLight has been recognized as both the top home and business internet provider in the nation by the PC Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards. These awards are based on customer surveys conducted by PC Mag, which said they had never seen scores as high as NextLight's. In addition to Top Home ISP (Overall) and Employee’s Choice, NextLight also received Top Home ISP (Fiber).

Rawhide Energy Station Named 2023 Plant of the Year
The Coal Users’ Group (CUG) named Platte River Power Authority's Rawhide Energy Station the 2023 Plant of the Year. CUG determines the Plant of the Year by seeking out power plants across the country who are innovative in their operations, implement best practices, and make continual improvements in the areas of safety, environmental performance, coal handling, boiler and combustion, and risk management. Rawhide is an example for the country as Platte River uses coal-generation to support the expansion of renewables and its growing, diverse energy portfolio for Longmont, Estes Park, Fort Collins, and Loveland, Colorado.

2022

Longmont Makes the Climate Action "A" List
The City of Longmont has received an A, the top score on climate action, from CDP, a global non-profit that runs the world’s environmental disclosure system. Cities and counties on the CDP’s A List are recognized for taking leadership on environmental action and transparency. Only 12% of cities and counties that were scored in 2022 received an "A" score.

Longmont Recognized Among Top Work-from-home Cities
PC Magazine recognized Longmont among the top 20 work-from-home cities in the nation, citing NextLight’s community-owned high-speed internet service as a major factor in its ranking, along with its cycling access, available coworking spaces and attractive setting. Longmont was one of only two Colorado communities to receive the honor this year.

GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting
The City of Longmont has achieved the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and
its management.

Longmont Recognized for Exceptional Use of Data and Evidence to Improve Residents’ Lives
The City of Longmont achieved What Works Cities Certification in recognition of its exceptional use of data to guide decision-making and improve residents’ lives. What Works Cities Certification, the national standard of excellence in data-driven city governance, evaluates how well cities are managed by measuring the extent to which city leaders incorporate data and evidence in their decision-making. What Works Cities Certification, a national Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative led by Results for America, has awarded Certification to 55 U.S. cities for outstanding data practices since 2017. 

DRCOG Way to Go Employer Champion Award
The City of Longmont was awarded the Way to Go Employer Champion Award by the Denver Regional Council of Governments in recognition of leadership in promoting alternative transportation modes to its employees and the City at large. 

People for Bikes, Places for Bikes City Ratings
For mid-sized cities, the City of Longmont was ranked 149th out of 768 cities placing Longmont in the 81 percentile of Cities that are bicycle-friendly by the People for Bikes, Places for Bikes City Ratings program. The People For Bikes City Ratings is a data-driven approach to evaluate and compare bicycling in U.S. cities and towns. From there, they help city leaders pinpoint improvements to make biking better for everyone.

Longmont One of Best Places for a Fresh Start
Longmont is one of the best places to move if you want to "start over," according to rankings from Livability.com. "Located about an hour outside of Denver, Longmont is a small city that feels like a small town. The sense of community is palpable because the people who live here are proud to live here," the report read. The website determined that factors related to a fresh start may include a career change, a spiritual reinvention, a new community, or artistic inspiration.

Longmont Recognized for Customer Service, Quality of Service, and Overall Value to Residents
ETC Institute recognized Longmont for outstanding achievement in the delivery of services to residents, ranking the city in the top 10% of all local governments in the United States with satisfaction with the overall quality of services, customer service provided by employees, and the value residents think they receive for local taxes and fees.

2021

NextLight’s Speed Continues to Dazzle National Rankings
For the fourth straight year, Longmont’s community-owned NextLight internet service was ranked among the fastest providers in the nation by PC Magazine. NextLight’s best-of-the-best performance has placed it in the top four every year, a streak matched only by Google Fiber.

Solar Energy Support Earns SolSmart Gold Recognition for Longmont
Longmont received a SolSmart Gold designation, recognizing its work in making solar energy more accessible to the community. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot initiative, the SolSmart program honors communities that are “open for solar business,” recognizing recipients their efforts in reducing the soft costs of solar energy and streamlining the permitting process.

Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) 2021 WEF Project Excellence Award
The City of Longmont was awarded the Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) 2021 WEF Project Excellence Award, a national distinction granted to projects executed with excellence and infrastructural innovation in the water sector. The City’s Public Works and Natural Resources department and its consultants CGRS Inc. and Carollo Engineers won for the Biogas Treatment and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Fueling Station project, a groundbreaking resource recovery and reuse effort that treats and converts biogas produced at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) into RNG for vehicle fuel. This project is the first of its kind along the Colorado Front Range.

Starburst Award for Garden Acres Park
The City of Longmont’s Garden Acres Community Park, located at 2058 Spencer Street between 18th and 21st Ave, was recognized with the 2021 Starburst Award from the Colorado Lottery for exceptional use of lottery funds in a major park renewal project. The project updated the irrigation system, renovated the 4-plex sports complex, which included a new restroom building, two new playgrounds, the dugout, score booth and shelter renovations. It also upgraded the landscaping, a new trash enclosure structure and completed improvements to the parking lot, lighting and concrete. The award was presented to City Council on July 27, 2021.

2020

Dickens Farm Nature Area Granted Parks and Trails Award from Colo. Public Works Group
Longmont’s Dickens Farm Nature Area was selected as the 2020 recipient of the “Parks and Trails” award for a large community given out by the Colorado chapter of the American Public Works Association (CO APWA). This newest nature area in Longmont’s parks system opened to the public in spring 2020.

Longmont’s NextLight Ranks Among Nation’s Fastest
For the third straight year, Longmont’s NextLight internet service is among the top performers in PCMag’s speed index, leading its seven-state region and ranking among the fastest in the nation. NextLight easily outpaced all other providers in the seven-state region of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, with speeds that were about twice as fast as the nearest competitor. Earlier this year, NextLight also ranked no. 3 on PCMag’s list of gaming ISPs in the region, due to its combination of high speed and low latency.

LPC Honored for Exceptional Electric Service
Few outages and fast response earned Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) reliability recognition from American Public Power Association (APPA). LPC was one of 141 public power utilities nationwide to receive a certificate of excellence from the APPA, based on 2019 data provided by the Energy Information Administration. That honor was received by only 7% of the community-owned public power utilities represented by the APPA.

Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community
The League of American Bicyclists awarded a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation to Longmont in 2020. The designation recognizes Longmont's commitment to providing safe accommodation and facilities for bicyclists, and for our efforts to encourage bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation. Through education, advocacy and promotion, the league works to celebrate and preserve the freedom cycling brings to their members everywhere. 

2019

Number 1 Boomtown in America
Longmont leads the way in the Smart Asset study on the top U.S. boomtowns. It ranks in the top 25% of the study for all metrics it considered. Longmont's economy has been doing well, as it ranks ninth overall for its yearly GDP growth from 2013 through 2017, at more than 5%. Longmont has top-30 rates for its unemployment rate and high five-year housing growth rate, at 2.6% and approximately 18%, respectively.

Smart Energy Provider
Longmont Power & Communications named a Smart Energy Provider, one of just 67 utilities nationwide to receive the honor, and one of only two in Colorado. This is the first year the American Public Power Association has awarded the SEP designation, recognizing utilities who are leaders in energy efficiency, sustainability and environmental initiatives, smart energy program structure, and customer experience. The designation lasts for two years, beginning Dec 1. 

A Top Digital City in America 2019
The City of Longmont was named one of the top Digital Cities in America according to The Center for Digital Government (CDG) a national research and advisory institute focused on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government

Money.com Best Places to Live in America 2019
The website collected nearly 160,000 different data points to create the list including economic health, cost of living, ethnic and economic diversity, public education, income, health and safety, ease of living, and amenities. They put the greatest weight on economic factors, housing, health and safety, diversity and cost of living. Quality of life, education and local amenities were also critical components.

2018

National Civic League (NLC): All America City Award
The award recognizes Longmont for identifying its most challenging issues and working collaboratively with the community to create innovative and effective strategies for problem-solving. NLC says "By recognizing the diversity of its population and bringing more community members to the table, Longmont has been able to identify and address community needs creatively and cooperatively from mental health to disaster relief."

PC Magazine Ranks NextLight Fastest ISP in U.S.
PC Magazine declared NextLight the fastest internet service provider in the country, placing the community-owned internet provider at the top of its annual speed rankings. In 2017, PC Magazine ranked Longmont as the fastest city in the U.S., and gave NextLight credit for it. In that year’s ranking, the magazine referred to local utilities such as NextLight as “the best hope we’ve got for mega-fast internet service in this country.”

American Public Works Association-Colorado Awards Resilient St. Vrain Project
The first two completed reaches of the City of Longmont’s Resilient St. Vrain project were selected as the 2018 winner of the “Sustainability” award for a large community given out by the Colorado chapter of the American Public Works Association (CO APWA). The award recognizes efficient delivery of infrastructure in an environmentally and socially responsible way that ensures the best choice in the long term. Award criteria included innovation, achievement, transferability and cooperation.

Longmont Ranked #2 City for STEM Jobs
Longmont is one of the best locations for high-tech jobs according to Livability.com. When it comes to promising career paths, STEM (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is where it's at. This is is the future of employment, as STEM-related jobs are expected to increase by 13 percent through 2025, compared to 9 percent for non-STEM fields. And STEM jobs aren't just plentiful; they're lucrative. The national average salary for STEM jobs is $87,570, nearly twice the average for non-STEM occupations. 2017

NATOA 2017 Community Broadband Project of the Year
NextLight™, Longmont's high-speed, high-quality fiber-optic network, was recognized by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA), who praised the  "extraordinary individuals who have the expertise and courage to carry the plan to execution for the benefit of Longmont’s residents."

2017 Annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award - National Procurement Institute
The City of Longmont is one of only 3 agencies in Colorado and one of only 68 cities in the United States to receive the award. It recognizes the City's its state of the art best purchasing practices.

2016

American Public Works Association-Colorado Chapter Award
Sunset Street Bridge over St. Vrain Creek was awarded the 2016 APWA-Colorado Chapter award for Disaster or Emergency Construction for large communities at the APWA-Colorado Annual Conference in Denver on Nov. 7, 2016. The award highlighted the coordination required between several agencies at all levels of government to replace the bridge, which was destroyed in the 2013 floods, and restore a critical north-south access route through Longmont. The City of Longmont was the lead agency on the project.

2016 Best Project, ENR Mountain States
Sunset Street Bridge over St. Vrain Creek was awarded 2016 Best Project in the category of Small Project (Under $10 Million) for Colorado, Wyoming and the Plains states from ENR Mountain States, the local region of Engineering News-Record magazine, which serves the engineering construction industry. The bridge project built a longer, wider structure resilient to future 100-year flood flows while also adding dedicated transportation lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. The award was presented Oct. 27, 2016, at the groups’ Regional Best Projects event.

Colorado Association of Libraries - Librarian of the Year
Judith Anderson, Director of the Longmont Public Library, was named Librarian of the Year by the Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL) on October 21, 2016. This distinguished award recognizes exceptional achievement during the past year by any librarian within the state of Colorado, including public librarians, academic librarians, and school librarians.

2016 Columbine Award for Programming Excellence by the Colorado Parks & Recreation Association
This coveted state-wide award was given to Longmont Recreation Services in recognition for Programming Excellence and best practices and creativity in programming. Recreation was nominated for their innovative program idea that brought Thorne Nature Center and the St. Vrain Valley School District together with Recreation to offer an exciting new field trip program for elementary students at Sandstone Ranch Visitors and Learning Center.

American Planning Association (APA) - Excellence in Comprehensive Planning
APA is proud to recognize Longmont's Comprehensive Plan, Envision Longmont, as one of eight plans as examples of excellence in comprehensive planning. In May 2016, APA launched the Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustaining Places Recognition Program Pilot. Communities that have integrated sustainability into comprehensive plans adopted or amended within the last five years submitted their plans for recognition.

American Public Works Association - Excellence in Snow and Ice Control
The City of Longmont was awarded The American Public Works Association (APWA) Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award winners for the year 2016. The APWA established the award to promote best practices in snow and ice removal while minimizing environmental impacts. The award recognizes accomplishments across the categories of materials/handling, equipment, training, community outreach, technology and environment.

2015

Pinnacle Awards - National Association of Government Web Professionals
The City of Longmont website, www.LongmontColorado.gov, received a 2015 Pinnacle Award and a 2015 Sponsor’s Award from the National Association of Government Web Professionals (NAGW) during its annual conference in Albuquerque, NM on September 23-25, 2015. Pinnacle Awards are judged by a group of web professionals from inside and outside of government web development, and are awarded to the best entries based on the following judging criteria: Team Size, Content, Organization, Design, Performance and Flexibility, Accessibility Standards, and Interactivity. Longmont won in the category for cities with populations of 50,000 to 95,000 people.

2014

American Public Works Association – Colorado Chapter - Awards
City of Longmont Engineering was awarded an APWA-Colorado Public Works Project Award for the City of Longmont Flood Recovery Project at the APWA-Colorado Annual Conference in Denver on October 14, 2014. This award was for large communities in the Category of Disaster or Emergency Construction. The project consisted of all the post-flood design and construction work including over 23 projects designed by 8 engineering firms and constructed by 10 contractors.

2014 Library Project of the Year, Colorado Association of Libraries
Awarded for “Expansion of Services for Children and Teens on the Autism Spectrum." Staff effectively reached out to and served participants each month through Special Access family programming that includes sensory story times, music therapy, parenting resources, bilingual programs and robotics during times the library is close to the public to ease participants’ anxiety.

APWA Bridge/Culvert Design/Construction/Maintenance
The Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association recognized the City of Longmont for its innovative and environmentally sensitive design on the Button Rock Dam Road Culvert Replacement project.

APPA (American Public Power Association) Award of Merit - Annual Report Contest
APPA recognized Longmont Power & Communications for its 2011 Report to the Community. The award is given to utilities that produce high-quality annual reports that exhibit excellent writing, design, photography, organization and creativity. The award is equal to a silver medal.

Century Award
Longmont Power & Communications is recognized for 100 years of service to the Longmont community.

Best Place to Live if You're an Artist
Yellowscene Magazine recognized Longmont for its thriving arts, theater and cultural movement that makes Longmont a destination for artists, artisans and culturati in Boulder County.

2011

CQ Press Ranking as Second Safest City in Colorado
Longmont was ranked the second safest city in Colorado, and the 53rd safest city in the United States by CQ Press. This is a result of the innovative and hard-working people of the police department as well as to the partnerships the police department has with many different organizations, local neighborhoods, and the various diverse communities within the City.

Esri International User Conference Best Cartographic Design, 2nd place
Awarded for Best Cartographic Design for the Longmont Bike Map. Longmont bested more than 1000 entries worldwide.

Top Ten Most Artistic Cities in U.S.
The Boulder-Longmont area was ranked as the eighth most artistic city in the United States in a recent survey by Richard Florida, the author of "The Rise of the Creative Class" and "Who's Your City?"
