Wildland Firefighting
Tips to prepare for a wildland emergency
Specially trained firefighters, in collateral assignments, make up the Wildland Response Team. Wildfire suppression refers to the firefighting tactics used to suppress wildfires. Firefighting efforts in wildland areas require different techniques, equipment, and training. Wildfire suppression also addresses the issues of the wildland urban interface, where populated areas border with wildland areas.
Longmont Fire currently has three rapid response vehicles immediately available for service designed to quickly mitigate wildland fires in the early stages of development.
The Wildland Response Team is primarily funded through cost recovery from state and federal deployments. When available, Longmont Wildland Resources are sent to other regions in or out of state to assist with extinguishing large fires. In turn, the government reimburses the City for all expenses. The reimbursements allow Longmont Fire to update vehicles, equipment and protective clothing that in turn help our efforts in mitigating fires locally.
